At the time, ahead of the match with AlphaGo, the Go AI developed by Google, Lee Sedol declared, "I will make it 5-0. I will do my best." However, after losing the first game and unable to hide his bewilderment, Lee Sedol lost consecutively through the third game, shocking everyone.
And in the dramatic fourth game, Lee Sedol won. At move 78 AlphaGo gave a resignation message, and Lee Sedol said, "After three consecutive losses, getting one win makes me so happy I can hardly contain it."
After watching the footage, Lee Sedol said, "I feel very embarrassed," and Sohn Seok-hee asked, "You said so confidently you would make it 5-0, but that was a press conference with a bewildered, trembling voice, wasn't it?"
About the match with AlphaGo, Lee Sedol said, "I was more bewildered by the second game than the first. The first game, since it was the first time playing, I felt I couldn't really show my ability. In the second game I really did my best. I lost without putting up any fight."
He said the shock of the third game was different. Lee Sedol said, "In the second game I really didn't expect to lose. The third game felt like, 'There is no way to win.'"
Above all, regarding the fourth game he said, "It was already a determined flow. At move 68 it can be regarded as a decisive move. It was not a normal move. If it had been a game between humans it would be a ko play. It was a trick. It was not the best move."
He continued, "The position was bad, so I played the safest move. You shouldn't play like that. I induced a bug in AlphaGo. Since it was hard to win normally, I created a variable. By playing that move I confused AlphaGo," adding, "It might have been the first and last time I used a trick."
Sohn Seok-hee praised him, saying, "Playing that way is also skill," while asking, "Why didn't you try to induce a bug in the fifth game?"
Lee Sedol replied, "If I had won the third game, I could have played the fourth and fifth games as well. But the fifth game wasn't a series comeback overall. Even if I had won it would have been 2-3. Was it necessary to play a move like the 68th? I just played the game normally."
