History lecturer Seol Min-seok, who halted his broadcasting activities amid a plagiarism controversy over his thesis, returns to MBC after four years.
According to MBC on the 21st, history lecturer Seol Min-seok will appear as a speaker on MBC's new variety program premiering on July 12, "Heartstrings: The Speakers" (hereinafter "The Speakers").
On the variety show "The Speakers," Seol Min-seok will be joined by psychiatrist Oh Eun-young, 82-year-old baseball manager Kim Seong-geun, traffic accident specialist lawyer Han Moon-chul, K-Buddhist cultural leader Ven. Geumgang, 32-year veteran comedian Park Myung Soo, and documentary producer Kim Young-mi, a specialist in international conflicts.
Seol Min-seok faced controversy in December 2020 over allegations of plagiarism in his master's thesis at Yonsei University Graduate School of Education. Alongside the thesis plagiarism, some factual inaccuracies were pointed out in parts of the content of "Naked World History," which Seol Min-seok appeared in. In particular, plagiarism allegations also arose over a 2010 master's thesis in history education submitted to Yonsei University's Graduate School of Education titled "A study on ideological debates appearing in descriptions in modern and contemporary Korean history textbooks."
As the controversy grew, Seol Min-seok stepped down from shows he was appearing on, including tvN's "Naked World History" and MBC's "Those Who Cross the Line," and temporarily suspended his broadcasting activities.
Later, Seol Min-seok returned to broadcasting after two years by appearing on "Greek and Roman Mythology: The Private Lives of the Gods" in 2022, and confirmed his participation in "The Speakers," marking his return to terrestrial TV after four years.
Seol Min-seok, whose degree had been revoked due to thesis plagiarism, is reported to have been re-enrolled in the master's program at Yonsei University Graduate School of Education since September 2022.
Meanwhile, MBC's new variety show "The Speakers," which features Seol Min-seok, will premiere on July 12 at 9:40 p.m.
