Former Super Junior member Kangin announced his return after about seven years of laying low following drunk driving and assault, sparking a debate over the move.
On the 6th, a video titled "Kangin's self interview" was posted on Kangin's YouTube channel.
In the video, Kangin opened by saying, "Hello everyone. I'm Kangin. It's been a very long time since I greeted you."
Kangin said, "I am very grateful that this year I began in the Philippines with a fan meeting tour, and there was an opportunity to briefly play a song I made in front of the fans, although it is not yet finished," revealing that he had composed a song himself.
Explaining the reason for releasing a new song, he said, "Thanks to the support you gave me at the events, I gained the courage to properly present this to you. I had a lot of worries, but thinking of the fans who waited for such a long time, I decided to release it as a digital single this time."
He added, "I believe that the moment I can sing again and the release of this album are all thanks to you. I sincerely thank you. From now on, I will try to greet you with a better appearance. Thank you once again."
Online, debate is raging over Kangin's return. Some netizens reacted that "there's no need to be brave about it," "is that really courage?", and "wow, that's really surprising," saying he still needs a period of reflection, while others offered support, saying, "that's enough time to reflect," "he lost a lot of weight to return, I support him," and "I hope he works hard now."
Meanwhile, Kangin debuted in 2005 as a member of Super Junior but caused controversy in 2009 with a drunk driving incident, laid low, and then enlisted. After his discharge, he announced his return to activities and was fined 7 million won for a second drunk driving incident in 2016.
Kangin was also involved in an assault incident in 2017 and ultimately voluntarily left the group in July 2019 after the controversy. He held a fan meeting in Mexico in March last year and met fans, and this year he conducted an overseas fan tour.
