Short drama "Father's home cooking," which drew intense interest with the meeting of Korea's representative director Lee Joon-ik and reliably watchable actors Jung Jin-young, Lee Jung-eun, and Byun Yo-Han, completed all filming on Mar. 24 and has entered full-scale postproduction.
The short drama "Father's home cooking" depicts the story of how wife "Soon-ae" becomes unable to cook after an accident, leading husband "Ha-eung" to cook home meals for the first time and changing the family's relationships.
The webtoon of the same name by writer Goritah gently unfolds the relationships and emotions of a family spanning generations through the medium of "food," and has won readers' love for its delicate sentiment and realistic empathy. In the adaptation into a short drama, it was reborn as a more relatable story by preserving the original warmth while adding narrative and character interpretations suited to the visual medium.
In particular, it features an increased emotional density among characters suited to the short drama format and enhanced immersion through episode-centered development. While maintaining the original work's warmth of everyday life, it is expected to offer a new experience through more dramatic structure and visual direction.
Directing was handled by director Lee Joon-ik, who has been widely recognized for his deep directorial skills through works such as the films "The Book of Fish," "Dongju," and "The King and the Clown." Director Lee Joon-ik is taking on short drama direction for the first time with this project and plans to deliver his distinct warm perspective and densely layered story even within the new format.
Director Lee Joon-ik said, "This is my first attempt at a short drama. Within a vertical frame, you will be able to observe the characters' deepest corners clearly. I set it so that the good parts of the original are not missed while the story can deepen," creating anticipation for the veteran director's new challenge.
In the main cast, Jung Jin-young, Lee Jung-eun and Byun Yo-Han gave passionate performances that vividly captured the characters on screen. Jung Jin-young's character "Ha-eung" is a father who has kept his distance from the kitchen his whole life and becomes responsible for home cooking for the first time when his wife can no longer cook. The character reconsiders the meaning of his wife and family as he experiences repeated failures in an unfamiliar kitchen. Actor Jung Jin-young densely portrayed "Ha-eung"'s inner change through cooking.
Lee Jung-eun was cast as wife "Soon-ae" and delivered a performance deeply immersed in the character. "Soon-ae" had been responsible for the family's meals for a long time but suddenly forgets how to cook, causing ripples in the family's ordinary life. Their son "Myeong-bok" was played by Byun Yo-Han. As the person who watches the family's changes most closely, he realistically depicts attempts to resolve family issues between "Ha-eung," who tries to cook, and "Soon-ae," who has forgotten how to cook.
