Perfect Crown's IU expressed her feelings about reuniting with Byeon Woo-seok on a project after 10 years.
On the afternoon of the 6th, at the Chosun Palace Seoul Hotel in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, an MBC press conference was held for the new Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown. The event was attended by the drama's lead actors IU, Byeon Woo-seok, Noh Sang Hyun, Gong Seung-yeon and Yu Su-bin, Lee Yeon, and director Park Jun-hwa. Under the moderation of broadcaster Park Kyung-rim, they discussed the project.
Perfect Crown is a drama set in a 21st-century constitutional monarchy that depicts a status-breaking romance about a woman who has everything as a chaebol but is frustratingly common-born and a man who is the king's son but cannot have anything because of his sad fate. IU plays Seong Hee-ju, a chaebol who is common-born, and Byeon Woo-seok plays Prince Ian Daegun Yi Wan, a prince who cannot have anything.
IU, speaking about taking the title role, said, "Seong Hee-ju has everything but does not have status, so she is a frustrating woman in a constitutional monarchy society. The keyword 'frustration' appears so early in the character introduction that when you watch the drama you will feel why it came up first — she is often frustrated and angry but has a cute side and is a three-dimensional character. So while reading the script she came across as an even more three-dimensional character, and I joined Perfect Crown without hesitation."
Byeon Woo-seok said he chose the project because "Prince Ian is the royal family member most loved by the people in the drama. But he is the second son of the royal family who must not make noise or shine. The biggest reason I chose it was that when I read the script I could imagine the scenes well. I also empathized well with Prince Ian's narrative. Seeing the character made me want to act him well."
He also spoke about his on-screen chemistry with IU, saying, "We actually worked together twice before. It was so amazing that the 10 years of chemistry that began then continued and was shown in this project, so it was very, very enjoyable. On set, IU made things comfortable and was a great help, so I am very, very grateful."
IU said, "This time she came as such a cool character with the determination to wash away past mistakes many times over. Ten years ago, he appeared in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo as the boyfriend who had an affair with my close friend. Exactly 10 years later we had the opportunity to work together for an extended period in a drama. It felt as if someone who had been preparing for 10 years, and there were almost no awkward moments. Although we hadn't interacted much over the 10 years, there was some comfort. Personally, because we worked together in the 10th year, I think we matched so well that I would like to work together again 10 years from now. A 10-year cycle would show how we've each grown, and that would be nice," she said with a laugh.
Perfect Crown will premiere on Friday the 10th at 9:40 p.m.
