Actors Kim Seung-hyun and broadcasting writer Jang Jeong-yoon, a married couple, expressed anger over malicious comments that crossed the line, ranging from accusations of "poverty selling" to remarks about their second daughter's appearance.
On the 5th, the YouTube channel Gwangsan Kim family uploaded a video titled "The Kim Seung-hyun family suffering from malicious commenters + unscrupulous shorts creators." In the released video, Kim Seung-hyun and Jang Jeong-yoon confessed that recent YouTube content had been repurposed into articles and shorts, causing them to be plagued by malicious comments.
The start of the malicious comments was "poverty selling." Previously, Kim Seung-hyun had posted a video in which his alter ego "Bonjour Kim" drew a caricature of his mother and even used AI to read facial features. Sensational shorts and fake news articles spread claiming things like "He became a physiognomist because he couldn't make money."
Jang Jeong-yoon choked up, saying, "I know how diligent and hardworking my husband is. But it hurts so much that people treat him like a lazy loafer who just stays at home."
He said, "We are living without any economic shortages. Kim Seung-hyun does events and earns money, but people talk as if he earns nothing at all," expressing his distress. He even emphasized, "I've seen comments like 'don't do poverty selling,' but we've never done that. We have no intention of 'poverty selling.'"
Meanwhile, Jang Jeong-yoon, turning serious, revealed shocking details about comments that crossed the line, saying, "There were comments like 'they say daughters resemble their fathers, so why doesn't she look like her father?'" and asking, "So does that mean the mother shouldn't resemble them?"—even targeting the appearance of their daughter, who is only 21 months old.
He added, "There were comments like 'Is she a woman in her 50s?' or 'Is she older than him?' No. I'm three years younger," protesting his unfairness. Kim Seung-hyun defended his wife, saying, "Our writer Jang looks totally youthful. Maybe she doesn't come across that way on screen." Jang Jeong-yoon forced a smile, saying, "She's not actually that youthful."
Of course, there were supportive comments as well. Some internet users expressed sympathy for Kim Seung-hyun's lack of drama roles, asking, "Why isn't this handsome actor being cast?" In fact, Kim Seung-hyun has not appeared in a drama since the 2021 SBS drama "Firebird 2020" ended. Although he has continued broadcasting activities, his lack of acting projects led to mentions of "poverty selling."
In response, Kim Seung-hyun said, "From the drama sets of the three terrestrial broadcasters to film sets, it's all a slump and difficult, so the number of productions isn't large," pointing out the industry downturn. He added, "There are still many people who have prejudices because of my variety show background or previous image, but I think as I age a little I'll become more serious and be able to take on diverse roles," expressing his determination.
Above all, he said emphatically, "We're very healthy as a family, and Riyun (our second daughter) is growing up very well, so I'm happy. I think things will go well in the future. If the family is harmonious, personal matters will go well, too." Jang Jeong-yoon also chimed in, "My husband is really diligent."
