Hip-hop duo Dynamic Duo member Gaeko (real name Kim Yoon-sung) is grieving after the death of his father, coming just three months after news of his divorce.
According to the music industry on the 5th, Gaeko's father, Kim Sam-ryeon, passed away that day. Gaeko is reportedly listed as a chief mourner alongside family members, keeping watch at the funeral hall and receiving mourners in sorrow. Fellow musicians, seniors and juniors, and acquaintances have continued to visit, and condolences for the deceased are ongoing.
What makes this news especially heartbreaking is that it came just after Gaeko recently experienced personal pain. Gaeko had personally announced his divorce in January after 14 years of marriage.
At the time he said, "I carefully share this personal news," adding, "After many long conversations, we decided to end our relationship as a married couple while respecting each other's lives." He went on, "The two will share joint parental responsibility and continue to fulfill their respective roles until the end," making clear that they would continue to meet their family responsibilities even after the divorce.
On the same day, his ex-wife posted on social media expressing the same position, saying, "After sufficient conversation we made a choice that respects each other." She said the decision was made after careful consideration by both. Having raised one son and one daughter after marriage, the pair said they chose separate paths but emphasized they would continue their roles as parents.
The news of his father's death adds to the sorrow at a time when he was going through a major life transition. Amid the sudden loss and the overlapping death of his father, Gaeko is said to be keeping watch at the funeral hall and seeing his father off on his final journey.
The funeral hall for the deceased has been set up in Room 31 of Seoul St. Mary's Hospital funeral home, and the funeral procession is scheduled for 8:10 a.m. on the 7th. The burial place is reported to be Cheong-a Park in Ilsan.
