Three years have passed since singer Hyun-mi, who was a giant star in the music scene, left us.
April 4, 2026, is the third anniversary of the death of the late Hyun-mi. The late singer passed away on the morning of April 4, 2023. She was 85.
According to the police, Hyun-mi was found collapsed at her home in Ichon-dong, Yongsan District, Seoul, by the president of her fan club, who reported it to the police. Hyun-mi was taken to a nearby hospital but never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead.
What made Hyun-mi's death more shocking was that she had shown she was still in good health by performing at a free filial piety concert just the day before. Korea Singers Association president and singer Lee Ja-yeon, regarding Hyun-mi's death, said, "She went out to eat until yesterday and came back, so it seems she fell. Last year she fell while tending flower pots on the veranda and broke her ankle, and even though she said, 'I'm all healed now,' once you're injured aren't you fragile? If you twist an ankle it keeps twisting, so I think that might be the cause. She fell in front of the sink, and I wonder if this wouldn't have happened if someone had helped her quickly."
The entertainment industry was plunged into deep sorrow by the news of Hyun-mi's death, and especially the late singer's niece Noh Sa-yeon and Han Sang-jin could not hide their tears at the funeral hall. When Hyun-mi's son Lee Yeong-gon cried out at the funeral hall, "How could my poor mother go like that?" Noh Sa-yeon comforted him, saying, "Mom went to a better place, so don't feel too guilty."
Han Sang-jin recalled, "At the time I was on the move and (acquaintances) saw the article. I was driving so I didn't tell them because I thought they would be startled, and at first I said it was fake news. Then I looked at my phone and saw calls from family," remembering when he received the news of Hyun-mi's death.
First-generation displaced-person singer Hyun-mi began her entertainment career performing for the U.S. Eighth Army stage and received much love with the 1962 release "Night Mist," and she produced hits such as "Face I miss," "When you leave, without a word," "All my love," and "I just liked you for no reason."
