The Day She Returns tells the story of an actress who stopped acting after marriage, made an independent film to return to work after divorce, and then, at middle age, faces an interview.
Earlier, The Day She Returns was presented through a Berlin world premiere screening at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival. "Director Hong Sang-soo is one of the true masters of contemporary cinema, who tells a lot with minimal means...I felt this film, with its distinctive restrained beauty, was the most excellent and accessible of the Hong Sang-soo films I saw at the recent Berlin festival…The subtlety in the way conversations flow is simply outstanding (Festivalblog)," "On the surface it seems simple, but it raises complex questions about how unstable memory can be, and how different a film can be from the real experiences it captures. It is one of Hong Sang-soo's best works to date" (Asian Movie Pulse), "With The Day She Returns, Korean master Hong Sang-soo has completed another large and small film that is sad and melancholic yet uproariously funny (LA Youth)," and other reviews continued.
Meanwhile, the parenting updates of director Hong Sang-soo and actor Kim Min-hee, who became parents later in life at ages 65 and 43 respectively, drew attention. Kim Min-hee is also listed as the production manager on this work.
