Director Yeon Sang-ho's new film "Gunchae" features actor Ji Changwook.
On the 2nd, the film Gunchae (director Yeon Sang-ho, distributed/financed by SHOWBOX, produced by Wowpoint·Smilegate, co-produced by Midnight Studio) released still cuts of Ji Changwook.
Gunchae is a film that depicts a desperate battle waged by isolated survivors inside a building sealed off by an unexplained outbreak of infection, fighting infected people who evolve into unpredictable forms. Among them, Ji Changwook delivered a passionate performance as Choi Hyun-seok, a security team employee at the Doongwoo-ri building.
Ji Changwook previously gave powerful performances in works ranging from "Love in the City"—which sensitively depicted realistic romantic feelings and drew empathy—to "Welcome to Samdal-ri," where he showed deep emotional acting through warm, sincere characters. He was also praised for completing characters that combined intense action and raw emotional lines in "The Worst of Evil," and for presenting complex inner acting within tightly designed narratives in "The Manipulated." He has shown a wide acting spectrum across genres up to the film "Revolver," which vividly portrayed a character charging toward a goal. He now returns to the screen with Gunchae.
Choi Hyun-seok, the role he plays, is a person who struggles to protect his precious family amid a suddenly unfolding outbreak. Hyun-seok, who becomes trapped in the building with his sister Choi Hyun-hee (Kim Shin-rock), who came to see him during his long-awaited vacation, tries to protect her by carrying his sister, who has a lower-body disability, on a camping carrier. Ji Changwook is expected to portray Hyun-seok's will not to break down even as the situation reaches extremes, and the character's emotional changes as he increasingly reaches his limits, in a three-dimensional way. In particular, his desperate efforts to protect his sister Choi Hyun-hee are expected to vividly reveal Hyun-seok's desperation and sense of responsibility, further raising the film's immersion.
The released stills capture Hyun-seok's tense moments after the outbreak began. The stills, which include scenes of him taking the lead with a pole to protect people, confronting infected alone, and intently watching CCTV monitors, deepen curiosity about how Hyun-seok—who, as a security team employee, knows the building's layout inside out—will resolve the situation. They also raise expectations for the relentless action he will showcase during the struggle.
Ji Changwook said, "The points of interest are how the infected change and how the survivors change and respond. It will be a very exciting and tension-filled new film," raising expectations for the work. Director Yeon Sang-ho said, "I basically thought he was an actor who is very good at action, but I was often surprised when he did emotional acting. It was astonishing how he researched the character and designed detailed acting," amplifying curiosity about the exploits of Choi Hyun-seok that Ji Changwook will portray.
Gunchae is scheduled to be released in May.
