E'LAST member Wonhyuk projected an irreplaceable presence on stage through the musical "Romeo and Juliet."
Wonhyuk opened the first performance as Mercutio in the musical "Romeo and Juliet," held on May 1 at the KEPCO Art Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
The musical "Romeo and Juliet" is based on Shakespeare's play and tells the tragic love story of Romeo of the Montague family and Juliet of the Capulet family. "Romeo and Juliet," which premiered in Paris, France, in 2001, previously met audiences in Korea with a 2007 tour.
Mercutio, played by Wonhyuk, is the nephew of the lord of Verona and Romeo's close friend, a key figure who drives both the play's energy and tension. Based on his distinctive, perceptive character interpretation, Wonhyuk perfectly realized a free-spirited, witty Mercutio.
In particular, his provocative side that would stop at nothing for family and friendship, and the desperation of meeting death after a fierce duel, raised the play's immersion to its peak. His frenzied performance, which heralded the prologue of tragic fate, also delivered explosive energy to the audience.
After successfully completing the first performance, Wonhyuk said, "This is a work I really prepared hard for, and I'm very excited because many sides of me that I haven't shown before will appear. As this is already my fourth work, I want to show how much I have grown as a musical actor." He added, "If you pay attention to the dazzling performances and the details of numbers that capture the character's emotions well, you can enjoy the show even more," pointing out viewing highlights.
Meanwhile, the musical "Romeo and Juliet," in which Wonhyuk appears, runs at the KEPCO Art Center through May 31.
