Epik High's Tablo shared the secret to raising his daughter Haru to be a fluent "bilingual" user.
On the 31st, a video titled "Friendship? Love? Parenting? Life counseling, we'll help" was uploaded to Tablo's YouTube channel.
That day Tablo spent time listening to subscribers' concerns and offering advice. During the session, one fan left a question: "I'm dating a British boyfriend seriously. As I entered my 30s, I can't help but think about marriage and children. It's still about the future, but I want my child to become a "Bilingual(이중언어 사용)" who can speak both English and Korean. How did you educate Haru's language?"
Seeing this, Tablo explained, "Regarding the bilingual part, your boyfriend speaks English and you seem to be fluent in Korean, so there will be no problem with the child becoming a bilingual user. But you need to balance it a bit."
He said, "My wife speaks to Haru completely in Korean. And I speak to Haru in English. Quite often. With Haru I go back and forth between English and Korean, but I didn't start English right away from the beginning."
He continued, "If you watched The Return of SUPERMAN when I appeared on it before, you would know—there was such a scene at first. When I spoke to Haru in English, Haru said, 'Don't speak English.' At that time Haru couldn't say a single English word. So we really started late. I waited until Haru opened up to me speaking English."
He went on, "Once that happened, Haru learned really quickly. Like all children. Children learn languages incredibly fast. So if you want your child to become a bilingual user, just divide the roles and speak to the child in that language. Then the child will naturally pick it up. Don't worry," he encouraged.
Meanwhile, Tablo was born in Seoul and emigrated to Canada with his family during his childhood, acquiring Canadian nationality. He married actress Kang Hye-jung in 2009 and has a daughter, Haru; Haru holds dual citizenship in Korea and Canada and is fluent in both Korean and English.
