Popular film translator Hwang Seok-hee deleted all posts after posting a statement on social media amid allegations that he is a three-time sex offender.
As of 5 p.m. on the 30th, all posts on Hwang Seok-hee's social media accounts, except for the official statement posted that day, had been removed. There were nearly 99 posts as of the morning, but all posts except for one were set to private.
This appears to be due to the sex crime allegations surrounding Hwang Seok-hee. Earlier that day, Dispatch reported that translator Hwang Seok-hee committed sex crimes three times in 2005 and 2014.
According to the report, in 2005 Hwang Seok-hee molested two women near Kangwon National University in Chuncheon and assaulted two people who tried to stop him, and in 2014 he committed acts of quasi-rape and illegal filming against a student at the cultural center where he worked as an instructor, receiving a suspended sentence.
In relation to this, Hwang Seok-hee posted on social media, "I am currently reviewing the related matters with a lawyer. If the report contains parts that are not factual, unconfirmed content, or expressions that go beyond the scope of legal judgment, we will consider corrections and responses," he said in a statement.
However, Hwang Seok-hee's sex crime allegations have also affected films he translated. The film Project Hail Mary told OSEN, "We were also greatly surprised to see the article this morning," adding, "Translator Hwang Seok-hee held a Q&A with audiences in mid-month to coincide with the film's release, but there have been no further promotional activities or plans for future collaboration."
They added, "Because we did not work together with translator Hwang Seok-hee on marketing and promotion from the start, aside from the one Q&A that took place, there is nothing related."
The film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is releasing a new work after seven years, has not issued a separate statement. With time remaining until its opening in July, it is presumed they will quietly monitor the situation.
Meanwhile, translator Hwang Seok-hee graduated from the department of English education at Kangwon National University and gained great fame by translating films such as Warm Bodies, Deadpool, Spider-Man, Carol, Spotlight, and X-Men.
