Famous translator Hwang Seok-hee, accused of committing three sexual offenses, issued a personal statement.
Earlier on the morning of the 30th, a media outlet reported that translator Hwang Seok-hee committed a total of three sexual offenses between 2005 and 2014, causing a stir.
According to the report, Hwang Seok-hee sexually assaulted two women near Chuncheon Kangwon National University in 2005, assaulted two people who tried to stop him, and in 2014 committed attempted quasi-rape and illegal filming of a student at the cultural center where he was a lecturer, receiving a suspended sentence. The outlet claimed he was prosecuted twice, in 2005 for forcible molestation causing injury and in 2014 for quasi-attempted rape, but both resulted in suspended sentences.
Until now, Hwang Seok-hee had been regarded as the most famous and well-liked translator in Korea and was widely known to the public. As a result, he appeared on popular shows such as the tvN talk show "You Quiz" and MBC's "The Manager" where he showed his daily life, gaining great popularity. He married his current wife in 2012 and is reported to have a daughter born in 2019. He was known for showing extreme affection toward his daughter and being a "dotting father," which makes these sexual offense allegations even more shocking.
He also communicated with many fans through his personal social media, saying, "If a woman in her 20s is thought to be attracted to a man in his 40s, you should consider it my delusion or someone trying to feed on my organs," making remarks that were described as feminist.
Regarding the sexual offense allegations, he said on social media that day, "I am currently reviewing the related matters with my lawyer."
He added that he would "consider corrections and responses if parts of the report are not factual, contain unverified information, or include expressions beyond the scope of legal judgment."
However, the allegations against translator Hwang Seok-hee are only claims by the media outlet, so determining the exact facts and truth will require further confirmation and statements from the parties involved. It is too early to brand him a criminal or make a premature judgment.
Meanwhile, translator Hwang Seok-hee graduated from Kangwon National University with a degree in English education and gained great fame by translating films such as Warm Bodies, Deadpool, Spider-Man, Carol, Spotlight, and X-Men. Last year he published an essay collection titled Mis-translating Words, and he also handled the translation of the new work Project Hail Mary, which recently surpassed 1 million viewers.
