Star translator Hwang Seok-hee has drawn attention as it was reported that his wife's plea for leniency was the basis for avoiding a prison term despite repeated offenses.
On the 30th, allegations of past sex crimes by translator Hwang Seok-hee surfaced. It was revealed belatedly that he had a history of being convicted in three separate sex crime cases.
According to one media outlet, Hwang Seok-hee committed two acts of sexual assault and battery near Kangwon National University in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, in 2005. As a result, he was indicted on charges of forced sexual assault causing injury and nighttime·collective injury and was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 2-year suspension of execution.
Also, in 2014 he committed a sex crime against a student at the cultural center where he worked as an instructor. According to the report, after drinking with the student, he attempted quasi-rape and illegal filming of the intoxicated victim. However, despite being a repeat offender, he avoided a prison term.
In the process, it was reported that translator Hwang Seok-hee's wife appealed to the court for leniency, which has added to the shock. The media outlet that first reported the story claimed that the wife's persistent pleas for leniency also influenced the sentencing. Accordingly, Hwang Seok-hee was sentenced for attempted quasi-rape to 2 years in prison and a suspended sentence of 4 years, and ordered to attend 80 hours of sexual violence treatment lectures and 80 hours of community service.
In fact, Hwang Seok-hee married his wife in 2012. His wife is also known as a translator who has worked on dubbed versions of popular foreign films such as Guardians of the Galaxy. Regarding his wife, Hwang Seok-hee said on MBC's Omniscient Interfering View that they met when she was a college student who sent him an email while he was working as a translator.

Amid controversy over Hwang Seok-hee's past, a segment of movie fandom is reportedly moving to boycott the film Project Hail Mary, which he translated.
