'Unpredictable (House)' Kim Sook, Song Eun I, and PD Kim Gwan-tae responded to viewers' explosive reactions.
The recently aired tvN variety show 'Unpredictable (House)' has drawn intense public interest, from the shocking fact that Kim Sook's Jeju house is located within a cultural heritage zone to the arduous journey to obtain construction permits. In response, director Kim Gwan-tae, Kim Sook, whose house seems to be favored even by the gods of variety shows, and reliable helper Song Eun I shared their impressions and behind-the-scenes stories.
First, homeowner Kim Sook said, "It was encouraging that everyone cheered us on as one. It was chaotic at the time, but looking back now I feel grateful that we were able to carry out the construction," while also saying, "Like the program title, I think more unpredictable situations may arise, so I'm on edge," which drew laughter. Song Eun I said, "I expected many people would be surprised, but far more people showed interest than I anticipated. I wondered, 'What is going on?' and 'Will this become tvN's golden child?' " offering vivid impressions.
Meanwhile, PD Kim Gwan-tae revealed his honest feelings when he first learned that Kim Sook's house was in a cultural heritage zone. Kim Gwan-tae said, "I thought we had named the program poorly. But from a director's perspective, I also thought it worked out well. I thought it was a good opportunity—when else would a variety show take on remodeling a cultural heritage site?—and I judged that the unpredictable processes could bring fresh entertainment to viewers," revealing his essence as a variety show PD.
He also confessed, "Near the end of construction, when we received notice that 'Ssuk House' could be removed from the cultural heritage zone, I felt sorry to have named the program 'Unpredictable' in relation to Kim Sook."
The possibility of even more dramatic twists makes the situation intriguing. Kim Sook said, "You will see results beyond what you expect from the episodes. I feel like I've gone through experiences I rarely have in life through 'Unpredictable,'" speaking as if enlightened and piquing interest. PD Kim Gwan-tae also previewed, "Everyone including the production team was tense, and there was an episode where Kim Sook became pensive," suggesting a challenging journey that isn't over until it ends.
The driving force that helped Kim Sook overcome the trials was her colleagues. "It was the power of my colleagues. Honestly, there were countless times I wanted to quit, but each time someone stepped in and helped me regain my composure. To be frank, even now I want to quit everything. Still, seeing the changes makes me feel happy and grateful," she answered candidly.
Song Eun I also recalled that she enjoyed the shoot thanks to the members' chemistry, which exceeded expectations. She added, "We were so earnest about the construction that we were confused about whether we were entertainers or contractors, and on set we had no idea which scenes would make it to the broadcast. Through the actual broadcast, I realized, 'Oh, that's how it was then,' and I enjoy watching every week."
Finally, PD Kim Gwan-tae said, "In the construction process to preserve Jeju's cultural heritage, somewhat unfamiliar terms such as 'andgari,' 'bakkatgari,' 'chukdam,' and 'ieong itgi' appear, and we plan to introduce Jeju's beauty and various information that we were unaware of. Also, the back-and-forth banter and genuine emotional lines of Kim Sook, Song Eun I, Lee Cheon-hee, Paek Ga, and Jang Wooyoung will provide diverse entertainment," raising expectations.
