"Harry Potter" drama series has been unveiled.
On the 25th (local time), HBO released the first teaser trailer for the new Harry Potter drama series.
The released footage includes iconic moments from the original work, such as the Hogwarts admission scene, the sorting hat, dormitory life and Quidditch matches. While following the familiar narrative, the direction stands out for its darker, denser reinterpretation. It also hints at a production approach that will unfold the story more meticulously than the existing film series, which condensed the narrative.
In particular, the series has drawn attention for being a "complete reboot." Major characters including Harry, Ron and Hermione are all played by new actors, and the plan is to cover the seven original books sequentially by season.
What has generated the most controversy is the casting of "Severus Snape." British actor Papa Essidu was cast as Snape, a role Alan Rickman played in the original films. Because of the casting of a Black actor, debates had continued even before the reveal, and after the trailer release reactions are mixed, with some calling it a "new interpretation" and others saying it "differs from the original image."
In addition, major characters such as Dumbledore, McGonagall and Hagrid are also played by new actors, signaling a different tone from the existing films.
The series is known to involve original author J.K. Rowling in production, raising expectations that the development will be more faithful to the original work.
Meanwhile, HBO's "Harry Potter" series is being produced with a target release of Christmas 2026.
