Baek Sung-hyeon spoke about his feelings over the early cancellation of the musical "Eyes of Dawn," which erupted from unpaid wages.
On the 26th, an interview with actor Baek Sung-hyeon was held at a cafe in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
Recently, Baek Sung-hyeon appeared in the musical "Eyes of Dawn" in the role of Choi Max-dong, which became embroiled in controversy over its early cancellation. However, after only two performances, some actors' boycott led to an early termination.
That day Baek Sung-hyeon said of his difficult decision to be interviewed, "The biggest thing seems to be regret. Personally, I prepared hard. I thought the production was a good one, and great actors and excellent staff had gathered for this fine show. I practiced diligently because I wanted to be a help, not a burden, and I worked hard."
He went on, "It had been a long time since I had gone on stage, so I wanted to show everyone a good performance, but I couldn't show the show after only two appearances, and that part is regrettable and personally upsetting."
Baek Sung-hyeon said the reason he agreed to be interviewed directly was, "Many people, including officials from the National Fire Agency and the Korea Coast Guard, reached out to me in good faith, and I wanted to use this opportunity to apologize to them."
In particular, regarding the early cancellation that occurred amid the unpaid wages, Baek Sung-hyeon explained, "This is really hard for me to talk about because I can only pass on what I heard," adding, "From when we were going to issue a joint statement, there wasn't even anyone to say 'we will join,' and there truly was no one calling. I can understand that feeling to some extent. Since it is not my matter, I don't feel I can speak carelessly."
After two performances, Baek Sung-hyeon also said he has not yet been paid his fees. He said, "I haven't even thought that far. I should receive them... of course I should," and added, "I feel sorry for the younger colleagues I worked with. They give everything in their performances every day. The ensemble members really performed so well and worked hard. I wish the production had succeeded so they could be compensated; that is what I find regrettable."
