Byeon Woo-seok highlights the core charm points of the IAAN prince character, raising expectations.
Perfect Crown, a new MBC Fri-Sat drama that will premiere on Apr. 10 (Fri) (written by Yoo Ji-won / directed by Park Jun-hwa, Bae Hee-young / planned by Kang Dae-seon / produced by MBC, Kakao Entertainment), is set in 21st-century constitutional monarchy Korea and is a drama about a chaebol who has everything but is annoyed because her social status is commoner (played by IU) and a sorrowful man who is the king's son but cannot have anything (played by Byeon Woo-seok), telling a romance about forging destiny and breaking through social status.
Actor Byeon Woo-seok, who rose to fame as a "rom-com genius" with the drama Lovely Runner, is receiving intense attention for his next work. Ahead of the premiere, Byeon Woo-seok said, "I am excited and looking forward to greeting you with a new character after a long time. I am grateful for the much interest, and I want to show an even better side because of that."
Among many works, he cited the narrative of the IAAN prince (played by Byeon Woo-seok) and the background and setting of a constitutional monarchy as reasons for choosing Perfect Crown. About his first impression of the IAAN prince, he recalled, "When I read the script, I could clearly picture myself playing the IAAN prince, and emotionally it resonated with me. So the moment I read the script, I felt I definitely wanted to do this work."
The IAAN prince character who captured Byeon Woo-seok's heart is a figure who has lived hiding himself because he is the second son of the royal family, who must not make noise or shine. Byeon Woo-seok chose adjectives symbolizing the IAAN prince as "lonely, dignified, loved by the people," explaining the reason: "In public, he never loses his dignity and maintains steadfast integrity and composure as royalty. On the surface he may seem to have everything, but within the royal family he has no place to feel at ease. Even so, he is a royal who receives the people's attention and love, the royal most loved by the people."
To express this, Byeon Woo-seok said, "I thought that as much as he receives much love from the people, envy and jealousy coexist. He can be kind to someone but cold to another. Because he must not show any weakness, I thought a lot about his relationships with others and tried to express the subtle emotions that emerge from that."
He added a point about the IAAN prince's romance: "I tried to focus on the IAAN prince's narrative as contained in the script. I firmly believed that the words written in the script, that narrative itself, would be enough to portray the prince's romance more deeply," increasing curiosity.
Finally, Byeon Woo-seok introduced Perfect Crown as "a work that is fun to watch as you observe what choices each character makes within the special background of a 21st-century constitutional monarchy and what results those choices bring," and added, "The changes in relationships between the characters will also be an interesting point to watch. There is a lot to see visually in the art, sets, and costumes, so please give a lot of interest and love to Perfect Crown," conveying his hope and making the premiere even more anticipated.
