First-generation idol group Shinhwa member Kim Dong Wan bowed his head and directly apologized for various controversies while pushing ahead with a scheduled busking amid successive scandals.
Earlier, Kim Dong Wan became embroiled in criticism for various SNS remarks to the extent that he was labeled an "issue maker." Most recently, he was criticized for supporting MC Ddingdong, who was embroiled in a controversy over assaulting a female BJ, along with remarks related to legalizing prostitution.
His posts were later deleted and he apologized, but allegations from a person claiming to be a former manager followed, further spreading the controversy. Kim Dong Wan called them "false claims that are not factual" and warned of legal action, but public sentiment did not easily calm. Nonetheless, Kim Dong Wan went ahead with the scheduled busking and sought to confront the situation head-on.
He emphasized safe performance preparations by announcing in advance that he had secured a sound director and security team, and on the 24th he successfully completed the busking.
Could meeting the fans who trusted and supported him amid the controversy have changed his feelings? That same day, after the busking, Kim Dong Wan again bowed his head on his personal SNS. He said, "I deeply apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable because of recent events," adding, "If my words and actions caused discomfort, that is entirely my responsibility. I should have been more careful, and I am truly reflecting."
In particular, Kim Dong Wan said, "From now on I will take more responsibility for every word and action," and added, "I am grateful to those who attended despite the commotion, thank you for celebrating the 28th anniversary, and I will act responsibly so I can stand on bigger and more wonderful stages."
Not only that, on the same day Kim Dong Wan shared a photo on SNS of a cake with teddy bear candles, and the message "congratulate everyone" attracted attention. Since there were six teddy bear candles, it seemed to carry the meaning of celebrating Shinhwa's debut. Speculation and interpretation are emerging that he may have reflected on his time with fans amid the controversy and experienced a change of heart.
After the controversy, Kim Dong Wan personally apologized. Amid divided public opinion, he returned to the stage. Attention is focused on whether this move can be an opportunity to recover his image going forward.
