Actor Jung Yong-joo was responsible for controlling the drama's pacing, freely shifting from tense stakeout investigations to a cheeky charm.
Jung Yong-joo proved his exceptional ability to inhabit a character by successfully completing his first official mission as Deputy Ahn Young-soo of NongHyup Life SIU (Special Investigation Unit for Insurance Fraud) in episodes 7 and 8 of tvN's Monday-Tuesday drama Seiren (directed by Kim Cheol-gyu, creator Cho Hyun-kyung, written by Lee Young) broadcast on the 23rd and 24th.
In episode 7, Ahn Young-soo showed a firm determination to complete his first mission as a full SIU member. Kissing his new business card and fired up with enthusiasm, he staked out the hospital room in place of Head of Team Lee Gwang-jin (played by Do Gyun), who was in a coma, placing him at the center of a tense development.
In particular, Jung Yong-joo delicately portrayed Ahn Young-soo's outwardly soft but inwardly strong demeanor as he carried out the operation despite his fear. He disguised himself perfectly as Lee Gwang-jin with bandages wrapped from head to forehead, and maintained his composure even when the perpetrator injected the drug, delivering a thrilling moment. Even amid extreme fear, he secretly installed a cellphone in the hospital room to capture the crime on video and secured decisive evidence for the case. Then Ahn Young-soo's pride in his own accomplishment, shown in his pleased expression, brought smiles to viewers and completed the character's growth arc.
Also in episode 8, Ahn Young-soo and Lee Gwang-jin displayed a lively back-and-forth. While soothing Lee Gwang-jin, who was bored from hiding, he vividly reenacted the tension of the moment when the perpetrator administered the drug. His line, "This was an operation I risked my life for," emphasizing his contribution, produced a sense of cheerfulness.
Moreover, when Lee Gwang-jin asked if he was a former detective and Ahn Young-soo lost his nerve and confessed, "I'm from the brain side; I entered after taking a test," the scene maximized the character's innocent charm. Later, visiting a genetics lab with Cha Woo-seok (played by Wi Ha-jun), he faced the shocking reality that Baek Jun-beom (played by Kim Junghyun) was actually Lee Su-ho (played by Kim Dong-jun). In this way, Jung Yong-joo added persuasive power to the narrative with a steady performance that held the center in urgent situations.
