On the 22nd broadcast of TV CHOSUN "Sikgaek Heo Yeongman's baekbap journey," Im Chang Jung was shown recounting the behind-the-scenes story of how he debuted as a singer.
Im Chang Jung is active as an all-around entertainer who perfectly handles singing, acting and variety activities. Heo Yeongman asked, "Being both an actor and a singer is similar to Elvis Presley. It must be difficult — how do you manage it?"
Im Chang Jung said, "I was born unable to keep my body still. I have to keep doing things and I am very curious," and added, "I just dreamed of being an entertainer. I was fine with being a comedian, a film actor, a singer, a stage actor, a musical actor — as long as I was an entertainer."
Hearing this, Heo Yeong praised him, "That's overflowing energy. Lazy people might be curious but only think about it in their heads and their bodies don't follow."
Im Chang Jung first debuted as an actor after appearing in the 1990 film "Nambugun." Heo Yeong asked, "But you debuted as an actor first — how did you debut as a singer?"
Im Chang Jung recalled, "After the film 'Nambugun,' work didn't come in. With nowhere to go I delivered gas and did other things. I also posted flyers. I had to make a living. There was nowhere left to go, so I went to see actor Lee Byung Hun."
He continued, "Before that I had done a drama with Lee Byung Hun. We were very close. One day I got a call from (Lee Byung Hun) hyung. He put producer Eom Gi Baek on the line. Eom Gi Baek told me, 'Go to the practice room quickly,' so I went."
At the practice room he went to, a musical director was waiting. Im Chang Jung said, "They asked if I could sing and I sang a Kim Jong Seo song. Suddenly they changed their posture. They gave me a script on the spot and said, 'Come to practice starting tomorrow.' I was cast as a musical actor. Then an album producer came to the musical performance," he said, sharing the behind-the-scenes story of his debut as a singer.
By chance, Im Chang Jung debuted as a singer in 1995 and recalled, "I debuted but the public snorted. Then one day on Daehangno a song I had heard many times came on. It was a track from my first album, 'Already to me' — that's my voice? On the street. I was so overwhelmed I listened to it there, and then it came on again from the next handcart."
He added, "And after about a week it occupied the street board charts. It made the top 10. So after going around the broadcast stations it ended up ranked sixth overall."
