That day Heo Yeong-man asked, "But you debuted as an actor first—how did you debut as a singer?" Im Chang Jung, who debuted in the 1990 film 'Nambugun', said that work did not come after 'Nambugun' and recalled, "At that time, since I had nowhere to go, I delivered gas and did things like that. I also put up flyers. I had to make a living."
Im Chang Jung explained, "It reached a point where I had nowhere left to go, so I went to see actor Lee Byung-hun. Before that, I had worked with Lee Byung-hun on a drama. We were very close. One day I got a call from (Lee Byung-hun) hyung. He passed the phone to PD Eom Ki-baek. Eom Ki-baek told me, 'Go to the practice room quickly,' so I went."
A musical director was waiting in the practice room, and he was made to sing on the spot. Im Chang Jung said, "They asked if I could sing, so I sang a Kim Jong Seo song. Suddenly they changed their posture. They gave me the script right there and said, 'Come to practice starting tomorrow,' and I was cast as a musical actor. Then a record producer came to the musical performance."
Im Chang Jung said that by an unexpected opportunity he made his full-fledged debut as a singer in 1995 and recalled, "I debuted but the public snorted at me. Then one day in Daehangno a song I had often heard came on. A track from my first album, 'Already to me'—isn't that my voice? On the street."
He added, "I was so overwhelmed that I listened to it all right there, and then it came out again from another cart. That song did that, and after about a week it took over the street board chart. It entered the top 10. So after going around the broadcasting stations it reached as high as sixth place."
