Comedian Kim Tae Kyun revealed he once gave half of lottery winnings to his wife.
On the 20th, SBS PowerFM's Two O'Clock Escape Cultwo Show featured Winner's Kang Seung Yoon as a special DJ, and the "jul-gyoyang" segment with attorney Shin Yujin was held.
That day's "jul-gyoyang" segment raised the question, "If a lottery ticket given as a gift, with the promise to split the winnings in half, actually wins, must this promise legally be kept?" The choices presented were "An oral promise also forms a legally binding contract, so you must split it" and "Remarks made as a courtesy have no legal effect, so there is no need to split the winnings."
Hearing this, Kim Tae Kyun said, "I think there must be people who actually experienced this. It certainly happens in married couples," and attorney Shin Yujin nodded, saying, "It does." Kang Seung Yoon asked, "Attorney, do you also buy lottery tickets sometimes?" and Shin Yujin replied, "I feel lottery tickets don't suit me, so I don't buy them often," and confessed, "My husband buys them every week." When asked if he had ever won, she said, "He doesn't tell me," prompting laughter.
Kim Tae Kyun recalled, "I had a similar experience once. It was not long after the lotto first came to Korea; the prize had rolled over, and it was during my dating days, so it was well over 20 years ago. The first prize was almost several tens of billions. It had piled up. I think it was about 26 billion won something," reflecting on his experience.
He said, "At the time, my wife and I went to a ski resort while we were dating. Then we bought a lottery ticket. When the results came out, four numbers matched. Not five, but four. Still, I thought four matches would be at least 10 million won. So before that I had said, 'If I win the lottery, I'll give you half.' To my current wife. But when it was four matches, I didn't know how much it was and replied lukewarmly. She said, 'You said you'd give me half,' and I said, 'I'll see how much it is.' I said, 'I'll go to the bank once,' and when I went it was about 36,000 won. It wasn't even 100,000 won," he revealed the twist.
Kang Seung Yoon joked, "Still, you at least broke even," and Kim Tae Kyun said, "So I gave 18,000 won," showing he kept his promise exactly. Kang Seung Yoon exclaimed, "Four matches would have been a lot of money," and Kim Tae Kyun lamented, "At that time the first prize was huge. But many people won first prize, so the amount became very small. So it was 18,000 won," expressing regret.
