The personal trainer Hwang Cheol-sun, who was sentenced to prison for assaulting his partner, also lost a civil lawsuit.
on the 21st, according to legal sources, the Seoul Central District Court issued a partial judgment for the plaintiff in the first instance of the damages claim filed by victim A against Hwang Cheol-sun and ordered Hwang Cheol-sun to pay about 15 million won in compensation. this amount is separate from the 20 million won deposited during the criminal trial.
this case began on Aug. and Oct. 2023, when Hwang Cheol-sun assaulted A, who was his partner at the time, on two occasions. the victim suffered injuries requiring three weeks of treatment, including fractures, and was also found to have had damage to a car side mirror and a mobile phone.
in the criminal trial, both the charges of assault causing injury and property damage were found guilty, and a nine-month prison sentence was finalized. a one-year prison sentence was handed down at the first trial, but it was reduced on appeal after some remorse was taken into account.
the civil court recognized Hwang Cheol-sun's liability for damages. the court said that "he caused damage to the victim through illegal acts such as assault" and determined that he had an obligation to compensate, including consolation money and medical expenses.
in particular, Hwang Cheol-sun's explanatory video posted on his YouTube channel after the incident was also pointed out as problematic. the court said that "he mentioned a significant portion of the victim's private life unrelated to the case, damaging the victim's social reputation" and also recognized liability for damages due to defamation.
accordingly, consolation money was calculated as 7 million won for the mental damage caused by the assault and 5 million won for damage caused by defamation, and about 3 million won for medical expenses and repairs to the vehicle and mobile phone was added, resulting in a total compensation amount of 15 million won.
however, this ruling is not final. Hwang Cheol-sun appealed the first-instance ruling, and the second trial is currently underway.
