IU showcases a three-dimensional charm as Seong Hee-ju, the CEO of Castle Beauty.
Perfect Crown, a new MBC Friday-Saturday drama that will premiere on Apr. 10 at 9:40 p.m. (written by Yoo Ji-won / directed by Park Joon-hwa, Bae Hee-young / planned by Kang Dae-sun / produced by MBC, Kakao Entertainment) is set in a 21st-century constitutional monarchy Korea and is a drama about a chaebol who has everything but is annoyingly a commoner and a king's son who is sad because he cannot have anything, a story of fate-defying, status-breaking romance.
From the casting news that drew strong interest from viewers, IU expressed her feelings, saying, "I feel worried and nervous, but the biggest thrill comes from knowing that many people are期待해주신다는 데에서 오는 설렘이 가장 크다. 시청자분들께서 끝까지 재밌게 보실 수 있는 작품이 되길 바란다" and expressed her gratitude.
She said she chose Perfect Crown as her next work after When Life Gives You Tangerines because "the title was unique and memorable. I enjoyed reading it because each character's personality stood out, and especially Hee-ju's unpredictable actions and the driving force behind those actions felt attractively different."
The Seong Hee-ju character who captured IU's heart is the CEO of Castle Beauty, with beauty, ability and wealth—she has everything—but she is a person who has lived every day facing the social limit of being a commoner. Describing Seong Hee-ju with the words "greed, temper, cuteness," IU said, "At first her uncontrollable greed and cranky personality stand out, but as the drama progresses and her deficiencies are filled, many cute and cool sides also appear," foreshadowing a surprising charm.
She cited "assertiveness" as Seong Hee-ju's special trait of carving out her destiny beyond given limits. Because she folds her pride to build a relationship with Grand Prince Ian (played by Byeon Woo-seok) and takes risks with various charms and a never-give-up mindset. Among them, "the moment Hee-ju's feelings for Grand Prince Ian change is also a part where Hee-ju's three-dimensional side is well revealed," which raises curiosity.
She also revealed that she focused on expressing the aspects of a character who had to prove herself and appear strong from childhood, drawing attention. IU added, "Hee-ju has become skilled at hiding her fragile parts with malicious expressions and gestures, but I didn't want to miss the loneliness and vulnerability that inevitably surface in moments. I tried to differentiate Hee-ju when she enjoys the dopamine of achievement from when she doesn't through the liveliness of voice and facial expressions."
Finally, IU chose as viewing points for viewers waiting for Perfect Crown "the speedy development in the first half and the tightly interwoven emotions among the characters, and the serious, heartfelt love story in the latter half," making the first broadcast even more anticipated.
