tvN You Quiz on the Block will present a "mother" special.
Today (18th) at 8:45 p.m., the 335th episode of You Quiz on the Block (directed by Heo Kang-seok and Kim Ji-young, written by Lee Un-ju) will feature Ha Ye-rin, a Korean-descended lead of the globally watched Bridgerton 4; Choi Ji-soo, a "pro-part-timer" who made her presence known in the drama Undercover Miss Hong; short-track legend Choi Min-jeong; and 27-year veteran actress Yeom Hye-ran, who moves audiences with heartfelt performances in every role.
Actor Choi Ji-soo, who won much love as Park Shin-hye's curly-haired sidekick in the drama Undercover Miss Hong, visits You Quiz. Choi Ji-soo reveals the meticulous effort behind her first substantial role since debuting 11 years ago, and, unlike her role as second-generation chaebol Gang Nora in the drama, she shares a surprising reality in which there is no part-time job she has not tried. She recounts being born during the IMF era, growing up amid economic hardship, and persuading her parents to support her dream of becoming an actor. She also says, "I had to pay off student loans," and candidly shares part-time jobs she held from age 20, including mascot costumes, logistics center work, and at kids' cafes, and that even after the drama's big hit she kept a busy schedule of six-day-a-week part-time work and one audition day. She especially opens up about the bittersweet aftereffects of spending eight hours making mint-colored G-Dragon photo cards in a photo-card factory and shares a poignant sincerity toward her mother, promising to deliver emotional moments. Meet the honest story of "pro-part-timer" Choi Ji-soo, a You Quiz guest who fills the show with both tears and laughter.
You can also hear the story of Ha Ye-rin, the lead of the mega-hit Bridgerton 4 that ranked No. 1 in 82 countries worldwide and the granddaughter of Son Sook. Ha Ye-rin says she watched Korean variety shows from a young age and professes passionate fandom for Yu Jae-seok from the start. The broadcast will include 63-year veteran actress Son Sook appearing alongside her granddaughter Ha Ye-rin to express special affection for her. Cast as Sophie Beck, a maid who portrays love beyond status in Bridgerton 4, Ha Ye-rin will discuss the audition process that made her the first East Asian female lead, the massive 2,400-pyeong set recreating 19th-century British aristocratic society, the Korea-influenced setting changes in the drama, and behind-the-scenes stories from the much-talked-about "water spring applause" walking scene.
Episodes about the real-life family reaction to the audition news are also expected to add interest. Despite suffering from macular degeneration that has reduced her vision, Son Sook says she watched all her granddaughter's works, showing deep love. When Son Sook mentioned, "there are some slightly risqué scenes," the embarrassed reaction of granddaughter Ha Ye-rin is expected to provide laughs. Ha Ye-rin candidly adds emotional depth as she shares a coming-of-age story of watching her grandmother's plays as a child and dreaming of becoming an actor, studying acting in Korea before going global, and the sense of responsibility she feels as an Asian actor. The broadcast will also show the heartfelt support of the mother who was always a steady pillar until Ha Ye-rin became an actor, as well as the touching love between grandmother and granddaughter, who have been each other's pride and great strength.
Gold medalist and chronicler of Korea's short-track history Choi Min-jeong and her mother will appear together on television for the first time. Choi Min-jeong, who started skating at age 6 and continued her athletic career for 22 years, candidly reveals her feelings about retiring from the national team after the Milan stage. Her mother, who once wrote a letter to encourage her daughter at her final game saying, "You are already the gold medal of your mother's life," will have her deep love and the thoughts written on the yellow stationery revealed. The broadcast will cover behind-the-scenes stories including winning first place despite a traffic accident on the day of a past competition and Choi Min-jeong's intense athletic life, in which she poured 120% effort to become Korea's most gold-medaled summer and winter athlete. The episode will also tell of the mother's sacrifice—selling their home to cover training costs, moving 12 times, and driving 250,000 km over 10 years—and Choi Min-jeong's surprise gift prepared out of respect for that mother, promising a deeply moving story of a mother and daughter who became each other's gold medals by doing their best in their respective roles.
You can also hear the story of Yeom Hye-ran, an actor sought by masters and a genius of performances that have moved viewers to tears. Yeom Hye-ran will recount anecdotes about being restless before You Quiz filming and reveal an unexpected side of herself: although she is currently the top sought-after lead actress in Chungmuro, she actually does not even ask directors or writers for their contact information. She will share behind-the-scenes stories of being sought first by masters such as writer Kim Eun-sook and directors Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook, and will also reveal the entertainment-industry social group's pastime "small heart alliance," whose hobby is covering oneself with blankets in embarrassment. She will candidly recount her journey from majoring in Korean literature and dreaming of becoming a Korean language teacher, to working at a publishing company while steadily auditioning, and to the theater-actor days when she juggled survival part-time jobs while wondering, "Should I stop acting?"
From her drama debut Dear My Friends to Goblin, The Glory, and When Life Gives You Tangerines, Yeom Hye-ran's career highlights from 27 years will be revealed. She will share the story of being moved by Song Hyekyo during The Glory filming and, although she delivered deep resonance as mother Gwang-rye in When Life Gives You Tangerines, she also offers the candid confession, "Actually, the daughter has the same name as Geum-myung." Memories of a cheerful mother who ran a rice shop while raising her children and a mother's unstoppable daughterly love, who is prouder of Yeom Hye-ran than anyone, will bring smiles. Through the everyday bickering with her 15-year-old daughter, she came to finally understand a mother's heart, and she will deliver a sincere message she wants to give her own mother, adding warm emotion.
