On July 1, 2013, at 2 a.m., a couple in their 30s went to the police and filed a missing person report saying, "My twin sister left home saying she was going on a trip, and contact has been lost." The sister had disappeared five days earlier after leaving only one text message. When officials checked the sister's registered vehicle, it was found not far from the house. But suspicious footage was captured on the CCTV that recorded the sister's car. The twin sister investigates where she could have disappeared to that night.
The sister's cellphone had been powered off since the day after she sent the text saying she was going on a trip. To find the missing sister, investigators painstakingly reviewed nearby CCTV and found a suspicious man in the driver's seat of the sister's car. Questions arise about who this man might be. As investigators narrowed suspects by questioning people around the victim, the team finally discovered a decisive smoking gun, and the perpetrator's identity began to be slowly revealed.
Ahn Hyun-mo said, "I can't understand how someone once called a genius could do something like this," expressing shock. Lee Ji Hye said, "I'm surprised by how premeditated the movements before and after the crime were," and could not continue, saying, "It's heartbreaking that the person did not show remorse and blamed others until the moment the crime was fully exposed."
Meanwhile, the broadcast that day featured Yun In-su, then chief of violent crime investigation team 2 at the Hwaseong Dongbu Police Station, who had led the investigation, testifying vividly about the situation as he struggled to catch the perpetrator. Psychiatrist Lee Kwang-min conducts an in-depth analysis of what psychiatric issues the perpetrator may have had that led to committing the crime based on the perpetrator's actions.
The tragic fall of the man once called a genius, "The genius who became a killer — murder of a professional basketball player," can be seen on the 17th at 9:45 p.m. on KBS2's Smoking Gun.
