Mixed martial artist Kim Sang-wook recounted his experience of being attacked by an assailant.
On the 16th, a video titled Zzanbro "Kim Dong-hyun, Ko Seok-hyun, Kim Sang-wook who brought the well-trained(?) guys" was uploaded to the channel.
That day, Kim Dong-hyun said while talking, "Didn't I say many people visit the gym? There is one unusual anecdote about Sang-wook. I was coaching at the gym until late at night and was about to leave when someone came holding a weapon," which drew attention.
Kim Sang-wook explained, "Our gym is in the basement, and when I locked up and came out, the second floor is also our gym. The stairs up to the second floor are very dark, and that day when I looked back, someone was sitting there. Looking closely, it was a member who had attended our gym before. I asked, 'Why are you sitting like this?' It was around 1 a.m. He said, 'There is someone doing personal training on the second floor.' I said, 'It's 1 a.m.; there shouldn't be anyone doing personal training. I'll go up and check.'"
He recounted the harrowing scene: "As I was going up to the second floor, that person was about 10 steps ahead. As I passed by, he suddenly took a knife out from the pocket inside his hood and slashed me. I was cut, so I fell backward. When I regained consciousness and opened my eyes, he was on the stairs holding the knife in reverse and jumping as if to stab me. He scratched my abdomen. I stood up and tried to run away again, but I was so shocked that I fell once more."
He continued, "Then he chased me again, holding the knife in reverse as if to stab, but there is a technique from martial arts to keep an opponent from approaching. It's called an upkick, and when I kicked him like that, he couldn't come at me and was pushed back, so I ran backward and got about 10 meters away. Once I was that far, he didn't seem to think about chasing me. So I called the police."
In particular, Kim Sang-wook said, "The police came, and I said, 'That person is the criminal,' but suddenly they pointed a taser at me. So I raised my hands and said, 'It's not me; that person is the criminal,' and they took that person away," recounting a humorous incident that drew laughter.
Ko Seok-hyun added, "What's more amazing is that it was five days before the match. But he still went on and won the match," which surprised listeners. Shin Dong-yeob exclaimed, "Did you stitch (the wound)?" and Kim Sang-wook said, "The blood flowed a little, but fortunately I won."
Meanwhile, Kim Sang-wook was stabbed with a weapon by a man in his 30s, identified as A, in front of a mixed martial arts gym located in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, in 2022. A swung the weapon at Kim Sang-wook several times, injuring him, and was ultimately prosecuted on attempted murder charges and sentenced to three years in prison and involuntary commitment for treatment. A reportedly claimed that during the process of learning exercise, Kim Sang-wook ignored and bullied him. He also claimed he did not intend to kill Kim Sang-wook, but that was not accepted. However, the court cited as mitigating factors that A had been receiving treatment for a mental illness and, considering the psychiatric evaluation by a doctor at the National Forensic Hospital, judged that the crime was committed in a state of diminished responsibility.
