Former mixed martial artist and broadcaster Kim Dong-hyun opened up about his experience as a victim of school violence during his school years and the reason he became a martial artist.
On the 16th, a video titled "Zzanbro: Kim Dong-hyun, Ko Seok-hyun, Kim Sang-wook brought in the kids who trained a lot(?) [Zzanbro EP.136]" was released on the Zzanbro channel. The video featured Shin Dong-yeob, Jung Ho-chul, Kim Dong-hyun, Kim Sang-wook and Ko Seok-hyun, who had an honest conversation.
First, Kim Sang-wook confessed that he had experienced school violence as a child. He recalled, "I grew up in the countryside and had no peers, and when I came to Seoul at 8, it was hard to fit in because I spoke with a dialect," and "When I was in high school, someone hit me on the back of the head while I was about to eat, and nearly 10 people all said it wasn't them, so I wanted to cry from shame."
He continued, "After I became a champion, I once tried to find that student to see him," and "I didn't want to fight. Later that person contacted me first and sent a text apologizing that they were sorry for causing a big wound in the past," he said. Hearing this, Shin Dong-yeob joked, "Kim Sang-wook's reply is scary. I heard he said, 'I'll contact you after the match,'" eliciting laughter. Kim Sang-wook calmly said, "Even if I found him now, I wouldn't want to hit him. I just want to ask why he did that to me then."
In the process, Kim Dong-hyun also shared a similar experience. Kim Dong-hyun recalled, "My real name is Kim Bong, and until middle school I was teased a lot because of that name, so I legally changed it because it was hard," and "At the start of the semester when introducing ourselves, people passing by would grab me and tease, 'Got Bong,'" he recalled. He added, "Back then I was introverted, so stronger kids would poke at me. That made me think I had to become strong," and "One reason I became a mixed martial artist was the bullying I experienced at school then."
Kim Dong-hyun said, "At the time my top life goal was 'strength.' I was stressed thinking how many times I would have to fight, wondering whether I'd end up at the police station," but he added, "Still, I thought fighting wasn't the answer, so I never fought during my school years." He went on, "Watching mixed martial arts made me think, 'This is it.' It's not fighting on the street but fighting fairly in the ring, and I thought I could become strong enough to be recognized by anyone," explaining how he debuted as a mixed martial artist.<
