British actor John Alford, who was serving a sentence for sexually assaulting minors, was found dead in prison. He was 54 years old.
According to U.S. entertainment outlet Page Six on the 15th (local time), British prison authorities said in a statement on the 13th that John Shannon died in prison on March 13, 2026, and that the prisons and probation ombudsman will open an investigation as with other deaths in custody. Alford had used his birth name, John Shannon, after retiring from acting. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.
Alford first came to public attention by playing the role of Robbie Wright in the BBC drama "Grange Hill," appearing from 1985 to 1990. He later worked as an actor in the ITV drama "London's Burning" as Billy Ray. He also gained popularity as a singer in 1996, placing three songs in the top 30 of the U.K. singles chart.
However, as his entertainment work declined, he made a living doing various jobs such as roofing laborer, scaffolder, and minicab driver. He was also involved in several legal troubles during that time.
In 1999 he was convicted of supplying drugs to undercover reporter Mazher Mahmood and served nine months in prison. In 2005, he caused an accident in which he crashed into three vehicles while driving under the influence, resulting in a 16-month suspension of his license and a fine.
The incidents continued afterward. In 2018 he denied two counts of assaulting police officers but admitted damaging a local authority vehicle. The following year he admitted to two counts of resisting arrest and was ordered to perform 12 months of community service.
Alford was charged in July 2024 with sexually assaulting two teenage girls. In court he denied the allegations, saying, I did not do that. There is no DNA evidence and there was no contact.
But in September 2025 a British court convicted him of sexually assaulting girls aged 14 and 15 at a dwelling in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, England. Immediately after the verdict, Alford reportedly shouted, This is the wrong verdict. I did not do that.
He was ultimately sentenced this January to eight years and six months in prison and was serving that sentence when he died in prison just over two months into his incarceration.
