Netflix film 'K-pop Demon Hunters' won the original song award at the Academy Awards with its OST 'Golden'.
On the morning of the 16th at 8 a.m. (7 p.m. local time on the 15th), the 98th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Among them, 'K-pop Demon Hunters' (abbreviated as Kedehun) won the original song award with the OST 'Golden'.
Forty years earlier, Lionel Richie, who won an Oscar trophy for White Night's 'Say You, Say Me', appeared as a presenter and drew cheers. Among the nominees were Diane Warren's 'Dear Me' from 'Diane Never Die', Nick Cave and Bryce Dessner's 'Train Dreams' from 'The Dream of the Train', Nicholas Pike's 'Sweet Dreams Of Joy' from 'Viva Verdi!', 'I Lied To You' from 'Sinners: The Guilty', and 'Golden' from 'Kedehun'.
Among them, as expected, the winner was 'Golden' from 'Kedehun'. Upon hearing his name called, Lee Jae cried and took the stage as one of the composers representing HuntRix. He said, "I am truly grateful to the Academy for giving me this wonderful award. Growing up, people teased me that I liked K. Now we are all singing songs with Korean lyrics. I am really proud," expressing his feelings.
In particular, Lee Jae said, "I realized this award is not about success but about resilience. I am grateful to my team. Thank you for being by my side. I am also grateful to the cast of 'Kedehun' and producer Michelle Wong of Maggie King," giving the honor away.
On stage with Lee Jae as composers of 'Golden' were IDO, 24, Teddy, and Mark. However, the acceptance speech time was too short. After Lee Jae finished his remarks, music signaling the end of the speech began to play. As a result, the many awardees were unable to fully convey their thanks, which caused regret.
'K-pop Demon Hunters' is a work about K-pop idol girl group HuntRix protecting the world from evil spirits. After its release on Netflix in June last year, its global cumulative view count surpassed 500 million. This became Netflix's top film record, and even compared with the former top series 'Squid Game', it surprised audiences by ranking first on Netflix overall. In addition, 'Golden' reached No. 1 on Billboard's main chart the Hot 100, and eight songs from the 'Kedehun' OST, including 'Golden', swept the upper ranks of the Billboard Hot 100, creating a sensation.
Furthermore, earlier 'Kedehun' had won the Academy Award for best animated feature that day. The best animated feature category was made more meaningful by the presence of Disney's popular animated series 'Zootopia 2' among the contenders. With the addition of the original song award, 'Kedehun' became a two-time Oscar winner that day.
