Actor Bae Yu Ram revealed an anecdote about his mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer, being scammed by a traditional Korean medicine practitioner.
Bae Yu Ram appeared on the SBS variety program My Little Old Boy, which aired the afternoon of the 15th.
On that day, Bae Yu Ram had a meal at his mother's restaurant with actors Lee Je-hoon, Kim Eui-sung, Pyo Ye-jin and Jang Hyuk-jin, who had worked with him on the drama Taxi Driver. Kim Eui-sung said, "Really, family seems to occupy a very large part of Yu Ram's life. Love and responsibility for family…"
In response, Bae Yu Ram said, "I think that feeling grew stronger after my mother got sick. She is okay now; she received a clean bill of health. My mother happened to be diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer when she appeared on that TV show," and revealed the story related to his mother's fight with the illness.
Bae Yu Ram said, "My mother wanted to receive traditional Korean medicine treatment. People around her said they had seen effects from it. At that time she was going back and forth between Seoul and Wonju. I was working, and if my mother said she needed money, I would give it to her," and explained the situation at the time, "One day my mother said she might need to stay there for treatment and take meals there. I went to Wonju with her to meet that person and said, 'Please take good care of my mother.'"
The problem was the side effects his mother experienced during the traditional medicine treatment. It turned out the practitioner was a "fraud." Bae Yu Ram said, "I was working, and one day my mother couldn't be reached. That person contacted me and said, 'Your mother is in danger right now. Please take her away quickly,'" he confessed.
Recalling the time, Bae Yu Ram said, "We went to a truly rural house on the outskirts of Wonju and opened the door, and my mother was lying there like a zombie. I wasn't angry; I was shocked. My mother didn't recognize me. We got her up in winter and went to Severance Hospital in Gangnam."
Bae Yu Ram said, "We went to the emergency room and the doctor was angry. The doctor asked if we knew she had cancer and said she needed tests and that leaving her like this was unacceptable," and added, "When I said she had received traditional medicine treatment, the doctor understood. He said my mother had stage 4 breast cancer. And within a week, articles reported that the person was a quack. Since then, if my mother doesn't answer the phone, I get really anxious," he said, expressing his distress.
