Actor Park Shin-yang mentioned the process of holding his second exhibition since becoming a painter.
On the morning of the 10th, Park Shin-yang appeared on KBS 1TV's Morning Garden Tuesday guest seat to talk.
That day Park Shin-yang greeted, I am the painter Park Shin-yang who is holding a large exhibition at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Museum. Park Shin-yang explained in response to the question of 'when did you start painting,' I have been painting since about 13 to 14 years ago, and the exhibition was 2 to 3 years ago in Pyeongtaek once.
Lee Kwang-gi said, At that time it was no joke. Among art lovers, it was said that actor Park Shin-yang paints, and he even majored at Andong University. People wondered when he would appear and what kind of paintings he would make. But in 2023 he had an exhibition at a museum in Pyeongtaek, and it showed clearly that he is not an ordinary artist, with traces of deliberation, he said.
Saying he is staging an exhibition with the concept of theater, Park Shin-yang said, The fourth wall originally is the principle of removing one of the four walls so the audience sits there, but in that exhibition we set the ceiling as the fourth wall, so we used a theatrical method without a ceiling.
With some footage of the 2023 exhibition released, Park Shin-yang was directly working on the first floor. He said, I held a theatrical exhibition where I worked directly for four and a half months. I moved my studio to the exhibition hall.
He said this exhibition is somewhat different from the first exhibition. He said, The Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Museum does not look like the museum where I held the first exhibition, so it is somewhat flat and the roof is low. I could not reveal the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts ceiling, I wish I could have, but I brought the situation and setting of decorating this whole place as my studio.
Lee Kwang-gi said, What surprised me was that they rented another space the size of the entire Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and rehearsed exactly that space, and Park Shin-yang revealed, We were pressed for time and did not have the leisure to explain this large project to everyone. Few understood. So we rented a warehouse in Andong and made a set the exact size of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts museum. Then we hung the paintings and rehearsed theatrical attempts there, he confessed.
Park Shin-yang added, Fifteen stage actors appear; that is the setting. When this painter leaves the studio, or when he sleeps, the spirits of the studio come alive.
Especially about why he started the exhibition with the concept of theater, Park Shin-yang said, When people usually go to exhibitions they feel burdened, as if they must study before going, and there is tension. I thought people could go as easily and enjoyably as watching a movie or a play, and I wanted them to enjoy it without thinking and feel it as it is.
Listening to the story, Lee Kwang-gi said, As a tip, if you go to the exhibition and say Mr. Park Shin-yang's paintings are so good, how much is this? you should not ask that. It can make people uncomfortable, and he revealed, Because the paintings from the first and second exhibitions are not for sale.
In response, Park Shin-yang said, I am not selling them. Saying how much if I sold them is an amusing question, and I know there are many who want to have them, but if you take them others cannot see them. When I acted many people saw and felt the effect; I think a painting's primary completion is when someone sees and feels it. So I am making this effort, he explained why he does not sell the paintings.
When announcer Park Cheol-gyu worried about storing many paintings, Park Shin-yang admitted, They are already too hard to handle. I really need a large warehouse. Lee Kwang-gi interjected, You are investing the money you earned from dramas into art, and made people laugh.
Along with this, Park Shin-yang introduced the four people who made painter Park Shin-yang. The first person mentioned was his elementary school art teacher. Asked whether the teacher praised his talent, Park Shin-yang recalled, Far from praising talent, I was scolded so much in art class that I lived with my back to art from then on. I was told to draw whatever I wanted, so I drew an apple, and was scolded tremendously, being told what kind of drawing is this. I was scolded so much and it was an open class. My mother saw it and I was scolded in front of her. It seems there was some intention.
He said, After that I went to study in Russia and thought about what art is while visiting galleries and museums until I felt it. Until then I had no interest in art at all.
The next person mentioned was Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. Park Shin-yang said, I had a miraculous experience at some museum. It felt as if these paintings poured into me like peppermint candy pellets. I was astonished too. Park Shin-yang, who still often visits Russia to see Roerich's works, said, I came to know the power of painting.
The third person was his study-abroad friend Kirill. Park Shin-yang said, I loved painting very much but did not think about painting myself. But there was a time when I suffered from aftereffects of thyroid and back surgeries. While filming I had my back operated on four times. It was not easy. I began to miss my friend so much. He is a friend I could contact, so why did I miss him? I thought it was because I missed the time in Russia when I could freely talk about art. So I missed my friend, and the more curious thing is why the longing occupies such a big place; I am working through these two assignments.
Park Shin-yang expressed gratitude about an anecdote with Kirill, saying, He was a friend who attended theater school and is a national actor of Russia, and there are many stories. When he said he would quit because tuition fell, those friends, who were national scholarship students, said they would give up all that so this student could study with them, which is really touching when I think about it.
The last person was the so-called 'blue-eyed priest, Bishop Dubong.' Park Shin-yang said, He is such a wonderful person, and I watched a video introducing the Trappist monastery; now I can say a few words about painting but at that time I was confused and could not say anything. I thought if I visited him some questions might be resolved, so I went to see him without hesitation.
Park Shin-yang said, When we had a trivial conversation he said his eyes and ears were already not working, so I offered to drive him somewhere and had an opportunity to talk in the car while going to a distant place. I was so grateful, warm, happy and it was beautiful. After returning he gifted me two apples as thanks, and I kept them at home and looked at them for a long time but could neither eat nor touch them. As time passed they were about to rot. Because I felt sorry, I took them to my studio and began to draw.
Lee Kwang-gi said in surprise, Because of the trauma of that apple you closed the door to your heart, but through the bishop it came closer and you painted. You opened the door to your heart, and Park Shin-yang said of his passion for painting, In a way it is like challenging an unsolvable assignment, so it stimulates a sense of adventure.
Meanwhile, Park Shin-yang will hold the theatrical exhibition The fourth wall at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Museum halls 1 and 2 from Mar. 6 to May 10.
