Group Blackpink member and actor Jisoo completed a character that fits perfectly through a romance that crosses reality and fantasy.
Blackpink's Jisoo plays the lead Seo Mirae in the recently released Netflix series Boyfriend on Demand, winning global viewers' love with an attractive character and strong presence. Boyfriend on Demand is a romantic comedy about webtoon producer Seo Mirae, tired of real life, subscribing to and experiencing romance through a virtual dating simulation to realize her romantic fantasies.
In her first romantic comedy and first leading role in a contemporary drama, Jisoo convincingly portrayed everything from the fierce daily life of a working person to fantasy romance in a virtual world. In particular, Jisoo's lovely yet frank and confident image created a level of synchronicity with the Mirae character that drew viewers in. Mirae's process of learning what true love is after failed relationships awakened feelings of excitement while delivering realistic empathy.
Jisoo's changeable charms shone in dates with themes that transcended time and space. Jisoo portrayed various settings such as hotelier, college student, flight attendant and prosecutor, and added rich visual variety with glamorous looks in some 250 outfits. The chemistry of the "virtual lover," regardless of Mirae's age or profession, provided vicarious satisfaction.
In the latter half, Jisoo calmly expressed the confusion she feels while moving between reality and the virtual world. In particular, as the hate-love romance with colleague and rival Park Kyung-nam (Seo Inguk) deepened, she delicately captured subtle emotional changes and a strengthening inner self, completing a coming-of-age narrative.
About this, Time magazine in the United States said, "Of the characters she has played to date, Boyfriend on Demand is the role that suits Jisoo best and shows the appeal of a female-centered romance genre; it is an enjoyable work," and Decider gave a positive review saying, "Boyfriend on Demand differentiates itself from other Korean romantic comedies through Jisoo's charms and the various dating scenarios she experiences."
Boyfriend on Demand ranked fifth globally in the Netflix TV shows category on FlixPatrol, a site that aggregates OTT platform content viewing rankings, and entered the top 10 in 69 countries and regions on the 8th, and as of the 9th it was holding the No. 1 spot for two consecutive days in Netflix's "Today in Korea's top 10 series," continuing to be a hit.
Meanwhile, Jisoo continues to move between roles as a Blackpink member, solo artist and actor. The music video for the title track "earthquake" from her recent solo mini-album AMORTAGE surpassed 100 million views on YouTube, and with the single "EYES CLOSED" she swept global charts, proving a solid position.
