On "Chosun's lover," broadcaster Hong Seok-cheon opened up about adopting two nieces and nephews and expressed his deep sincerity toward his family.
On the 9th episode of the TV CHOSUN variety show Chosun's lover, the story of Hong Seok-cheon and his adopted daughter was revealed.
That day Hong Seok-cheon said, "In Korea, if you don't know me you'd probably be a spy, but there may be people who don't know me," drawing attention by adding, "Actually I have a daughter and a son." He revealed that he had adopted his younger sister's two children in the past. Hong Seok-cheon changed their family name so his nieces and nephews would not be hurt and legally adopted them as his own children. The adopted daughter asked, "When I was first adopted, did you think uncle would get married at around 30?" and Hong Seok-cheon laughed, saying, "I didn't think you'd get married so soon."
When the daughter asked, "Was the adoption talk started by uncle?" Hong Seok-cheon carefully recalled the situation. He said, "After our younger sister's divorce she was raising two children alone and she met a new love," adding, "but from my perspective it was someone she should never have met." He continued, "The situation gradually worsened and eventually my sister had to leave as if running away," recalling, "As soon as I called I told her, 'Take the children and come out,' and my sister came to us as if fleeing."
Hong Seok-cheon said, "The family was hiding that fact because they were worried I would worry," and added, "But I later found out and couldn't just leave the situation as it was." He said, "I let everything go and told my sister, 'I'll take responsibility for everything, so come up to Seoul,'" adding, "My sister came up at night with the children." Recalling that time, Hong Seok-cheon eventually showed tears.
He also explained why he decided to adopt. Hong Seok-cheon said, "I didn't think about adoption from the start," and added, "But how much scrutiny must my sister have faced after her first marriage failed?" He explained, "Because there was an atmosphere in our family that divorce didn't happen, my sister must have had a harder time," adding, "Isn't my sister a woman before being a mother? There would be times when she wanted to find her own happiness, and I worried the children would become a burden."
Then he learned that under a changed system an uncle could adopt his nieces and nephews. Hong Seok-cheon said, "After seeing the news I discussed it with the children and decided to adopt," adding, "I told my sister that if she found a new love she should go. I said I would take responsibility for the children."
The adopted daughter also recalled the time and spoke sincerely. She said, "After being adopted by my uncle my life completely changed," adding, "Since that day I gained psychological stability." She also said, "There is a sense of relief knowing I can ask for help anytime I suddenly need it," and added, "I have never regretted becoming Hong Seok-cheon's daughter."
When the daughter asked, "Wasn't it good to adopt me?" Hong Seok-cheon answered, "Yes. If you weren't here, what meaning would I have in working and making money?" showing a family that gives each other great strength.
Later Hong Seok-cheon met the prospective son-in-law and the in-laws in Busan. The in-law asked cautiously, "Originally an uncle, is it possible to adopt as a daughter?" Hong Seok-cheon replied, "I had many concerns, but I ultimately decided for the children." When asked whether it was a choice for the nieces and nephews or for his sister, he joked to the niece and nephew, "Cover your ears," then said, "The first was my sister's life. My sister went through difficult things at too young an age," adding, "So I decided to take responsibility for the children."
Touched by Hong Seok-cheon's heartfelt story, the prospective in-law also showed tears. He said, "He is truly an amazing person. Seeing him shed tears made me think they really look like a father and daughter," adding, "I felt he is a warm-hearted person."
At the end of the broadcast, when asked about the meaning of family, Hong Seok-cheon said, "To me, family is a great shield and like a homework assignment to be solved," showing an emotional moment. He added, "Now that a son-in-law has come, the family has one more member," and said with a smile, "It feels like the homework has increased for now, but in the end it will become the shield that protects me."
