'Joseon's lover' entertainer Hong Seok-cheon revealed mixed feelings ahead of his adopted daughter's wedding and showed tears during a meeting with the prospective in-laws.
On the 9th episode of TV CHOSUN's variety show Joseon's lover, Hong Seok-cheon appeared as the new lover.
That day the production team met Hong Seok-cheon in Busan and listened to his story. The MCs could not hide their surprise at Hong Seok-cheon's appearance. Kim Kook Jin asked, "55-year-old Hong Seok-cheon appeared on Lover? Why?" in puzzlement, and the cast joked, "Is this possibly Korea's first same-sex marriage?" showing their curiosity.
But the news Hong Seok-cheon shared was not about his own marriage. He said, "If you don't know me in Korea you'd probably be a spy, but there may be people who don't know me," and "actually I have a daughter and a son," drawing attention. Hong Seok-cheon reiterated that he had previously adopted his older sister's two children. He said he decided to adopt them himself to prevent his nieces and nephews from getting hurt, and he registered them as his children on the official family relation certificate. At the time he showed deep affection, saying, "They are no different from my blood."
Hong Seok-cheon said, "My eldest daughter is getting married," explaining the reason he appeared on the broadcast. He said, "It will be a time to show what kind of life my daughter has lived and what future she dreams of. Please view it kindly." When the production team asked, "You said there's something important tomorrow," Hong Seok-cheon explained, "The in-laws live in Busan," and said he came down from Seoul to Busan for the formal meeting.
On the train ride, Hong Seok-cheon could not hide his nervousness. He honestly said, "Their family knows me well, but I don't know their family well," and "it feels like taking an audition." During this process, scenes of him naturally holding his daughter's hand were captured. The daughter, saying it felt "warm and solid," expressed a swelling emotion.
Arriving in Busan, Hong Seok-cheon met the prospective son-in-law and the in-law family. Even in the tense atmosphere, he eased the mood with his trademark wit. He joked to the elder in-law, "Can't I call you hyung (older brother)?" which drew laughter. The panel watching expressed surprise, saying, "Can you say that in front of the in-laws?" which further softened the mood. Eventually the form of address was settled as "sadon" (in-law), adding to the laughter. Hong Seok-cheon also cautiously asked, "Is this a head family that holds ancestral rites?" When told it was not, he breathed a sigh of relief and laughed.
That day the elder in-law also cautiously asked Hong Seok-cheon a question. When asked, "I wondered whether an uncle being able to adopt a daughter was possible," Hong Seok-cheon said, "I also worried a lot," and conveyed his honest feelings. He added, "First of all it was my sister's life. My sister went through hardship at a very young age," and said, "So I decided I would take responsibility for the children."
He also spoke about the nieces and nephews' reactions at the time. Hong Seok-cheon said, "At first they said they would follow the adults' decision, but because the children were going through puberty they had many concerns," and added, "It was especially so because of the issue of changing their family name." He said, "Although my daughter doesn't express it, there must have been sad parts in her heart," and added, "So I'm grateful to the prospective son-in-law as well. He has bright energy and I think he will be a support for my daughter."
Moved by Hong Seok-cheon's sincere words and tears, the prospective in-law also expressed his feelings. He said, "I felt he is truly an admirable person," and added, "Seeing him shed tears made me think he is a real father. He is a warm-hearted person."
