"The King's Warden" director Jang Hang-jun shared his feelings on surpassing 10 million admissions.
On the 8th episode of SBS PowerFM's Bae Seong-jae's Ten, director Jang Hang-jun of The King's Warden and production company CEO Jang Won-seok appeared as guests.
The broadcast segment was recorded on the 4th. Bae Seong-jae said, "The recording date was just before 10 million, but the broadcast on the 8th is likely to have surpassed 10 million. Just in case, I'll record two versions," he said.
CEO Jang Won-seok said, "It looks certain to pass 10 million by this Saturday," and director Jang Hang-jun added, "You might think that's arrogant, but it's true. Conservatively, Saturday," he chimed in.
Then Bae Seong-jae asked in advance, "You have surpassed 10 million admissions. How do you feel about crossing 10 million in Korea's film industry?", and Jang Hang-jun joked suspiciously, "It seems your intent is to make me choke. What is your intent?" which provoked laughter.
Jang Hang-jun said, "I am very grateful and I can't believe it. All of our family felt the same," and confessed, "After seeing the first-day score, I was discouraged. It performed much lower than expected. The first day drew about 110,000 people. That was really... inwardly, I thought at least 200,000 should come out."
He continued, "Because the first-day numbers were not good, I thought, 'The film will fail again. It won't pass the break-even point. Who should I blame now?' If people blame me, it would be too hard on me," and added, "I'm so grateful for surpassing 10 million. I am living through days I can't believe."
He also shared the behind-the-scenes of casting Yoo Hai Jin. Jang Hang-jun joked, "When Hae-jin gets a script request, his answer takes a very long time. For some people it took eight years. People with short lifespans really go to another world. Just joking," and elaborated, "Yoo Hai Jin thinks the script is extremely important. He and I have been friends for a long time, and he said, 'Thank you for trusting me.' No other actor came to mind."
