Hollywood's rising star Timothy Chalamet (30) is under fire for remarks that seemed to belittle the popularity of opera and ballet, and veteran Jamie Lee Curtis (67) even stepped in to chide him.
On the 8th (local time), according to the Daily Mail's report, Jamie Lee Curtis recently shared a post on her social media that appeared to directly target Timothy Chalamet's controversial remarks, expressing displeasure.
The controversy began at a town hall meeting held on Feb. 24. At the time, Timothy Chalamet said with a laugh, "I don't want to work in opera or ballet. It feels like forcing to maintain something that nobody cares about."
Realizing his mistake belatedly, Timothy tried to make amends, saying, "I respect all those involved in opera and ballet. I think I just lost about 14 cents of audience," but public opinion had already turned cold. In particular, criticism poured in that his remarks showed "a lack of respect even for his family's roots" after it was revealed that both his mother and grandmother were professional dancers.
In response, Jamie Lee Curtis supported the criticism by quoting a post by Broadway actor Zach McNally. The post criticized, "In a time when artificial intelligence (AI) threatens all forms of art, why does an artist attack fellow artists who practice pure performing arts like theater, ballet and opera?"
Jamie Lee Curtis did not stop there; she publicly expressed support for the performing arts by sharing a video of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet and also indirectly pressured Timothy by showing support for Oscar best actor contender Michael B. Jordan.
As a result, dark clouds gathered over Timothy Chalamet's Oscar prospects. According to awards prediction site Gold Derby, Michael B. Jordan of the film Sinners is surging with a 48.28% chance of winning best actor, while Timothy has fallen to 36.99% and been pushed back.
Although Academy voting closed last Thursday, it will be possible to see how this controversy affected the results at the 98th Academy Awards ceremony to be held on the 15th.
Meanwhile, even the principal of LaGuardia High School, Timothy Chalamet's alma mater, sent an open letter scolding him with "We know your true intentions. You should have behaved better," and the "timothy bash" has continued across Hollywood.
