Hollywood's "prince" Timothy Chalamet (30) has once again become embroiled in controversy over blunt remarks. This time, comments that seemed to target classical performing arts such as ballet and opera sparked the uproar. Is it the candidness of a trending actor riding a box-office wave, or excessive arrogance? The backlash continues.
According to interviews recently released by U.S. outlets Variety and CNN, Chalamet had an in-depth conversation with senior actor Matthew McConaughey about the future of the film industry. The problem erupted while he was mentioning changes in the streaming era.
Chalamet dropped a bombshell, saying, "I want to work in art forms that people actually care about," and "I don't want to work in places like ballet or opera where no one cares anymore, saying 'we have to keep this alive.'" He added a pointed joke while expressing respect for those involved, saying, "the ratings just fell by 14 cents."
As soon as the remarks were released, the internet boiled over. Critics accused him of belittling classical arts by calling them "fields nobody cares about." Internet users expressed disappointment, saying, "honestly, his head is empty," "it reveals a lack of cultural literacy," and "he should choose his words carefully," while some defended him, saying, "he accurately pinpointed the reality of the entertainment industry."
This is not the first time Chalamet's "mouth" has caused controversy. During promotion for the film Marty Supreme, he praised his own acting as "a performance at the highest level" and "the best acting of my career," drawing criticism for self-praise.
Comedian Chelsea Handler publicly attacked him on her podcast, saying, "It's not easy to listen to someone brag about how good an actor they are. I've never seen an actor lift themselves up like that," which drew attention. Her comment that she "pursues greatness," referencing legendary actors such as Marlon Brando at awards shows, also drew mixed reactions: criticism that it was "arrogant rather than confident" and views that it was "the boldness of a young actor."
Despite the ongoing controversy, there is no denying that Chalamet is currently the trend in Hollywood. He is also in a public relationship with famous broadcaster and entrepreneur Kylie for more than a year.
