Comedian Kim Young-chul revealed the story of an unexpected fire alarm commotion he experienced while studying in the U.K.
On the 6th the YouTube channel Kim Young-chul Original uploaded a video titled "Why did Kim Young-chul, who went to the U.K. to learn English, nearly die? (actual situation)".
In the video, Kim Young-chul updated fans on visiting the U.K. as the second installment of his 'half-a-century study abroad challenge' following his study in Japan. After finishing a radio broadcast during the Lunar New Year holiday, he headed straight to the airport. Before departing, he met a friend who is an 'honorary Brit' and heard stories of muggings and pickpocketing, saying "I actually don't want to go" and showing a frightened appearance. Nevertheless, he said, "My Japanese skills are improving, but my English seems to be getting worse," and explained the reason he decided to study abroad: "I want to study English again and show the stature of an English-speaking comedian."
After arriving in the U.K., an unexpected incident occurred while he was preparing breakfast at his accommodation. While toasting bread in a toaster, the hotel fire alarm suddenly sounded throughout the building. Kim Young-chul recalled the startled moment, saying, "I was so worried whether I had started a fire or whether there was a real fire. I wondered if it might have started in my room." Upon checking, the cause turned out to be smoke produced when the bread left in the toaster burned.
He said, "It smelled," and hurriedly opened a window to ventilate, and he explained the situation to the hotel. He added, "I'm sorry for causing a commotion. It seems the alarm device was triggered by very slight smoke," and "Although the bread was completely burned, luckily nothing happened. The alarm sounded for about five minutes and then stopped." He also apologized, saying, "I'm sorry to have startled the guests at the London Bridge accommodation."
Afterward, Kim Young-chul fixed his phone securely with an anti-theft strap as he moved through the streets of London, and after finishing a meal he went to a café and began his eight-night, nine-day study-abroad schedule in the U.K.
He also visited the Cotswolds, known as a village from a fairy tale, but because of the pouring rain he headed back to a café, and unexpected situations continued. He even lost a microphone for filming and spent some time searching for it, but eventually found it in his bag and breathed a sigh of relief. Kim Young-chul said, "Two days after arriving in the U.K., I almost gave up and went back to Korea," wiping his chest.
After that he arrived at the language school and began full-scale language training, but he showed considerable bewilderment at the unfamiliar British English pronunciation, foreshadowing his future study-abroad life.<
