According to a News1 report on the 7th, the Seoul Gangnam Police Station is investigating Lee Jae-ryong for violating the Road Traffic Act (failure to take measures after an accident, etc.).
Earlier, at around 2 a.m. that day, Lee Jae-ryong is accused of driving a vehicle near Samsung Jungang Station on Seoul Subway Line 9, crashing into a central divider and fleeing. He parked the vehicle at his home immediately after the accident, went to an acquaintance's house, and was later apprehended by the police. The police are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
Subsequent alcohol tests reportedly showed Lee Jae-ryong's blood alcohol concentration at a level that would result in license suspension.
News of Lee Jae-ryong's traffic accident has sparked public criticism. In particular, because Lee Jae-ryong had previously been involved in several incidents related to drinking, the fallout was greater. He was earlier charged in 2003 for causing an accident while driving under the influence and refusing a breathalyzer test, and his license was canceled.
In addition, in August 2019 he received a suspended indictment for allegedly breaking a bowling alley sign while intoxicated at a location in Gangnam District, Seoul. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office Criminal Division 7 decided on a suspended indictment for Lee Jae-ryong, who was referred to prosecutors on a charge of property damage. The damage amounted to about 500,000 won, and the prosecution issued a suspended indictment considering the minor nature of the case and that the victim's side had been compensated.
At the time, Lee Jae-ryong's side said, "While intoxicated I knocked over the sign and immediately compensated the full amount of the damage. I offered a sincere personal apology and reached an amicable settlement with the victim. I am sorry for causing concern."
Although the incident could have been a simple mistake while intoxicated, public opinion was negative because Lee Jae-ryong already had a history of drunk driving. There is widespread negative sentiment because it appears he repeats the same mistakes without reflecting.
The problem was that the traffic accident happened again after six years. Not only was this a second allegation of drunk driving, but public opinion was even more unfavorable because he caused trouble for his wife Yoo Ho-jeong, who recently returned to home screens after 11 years.
Yoo Ho-jeong is appearing as Han Seong-mi, a psychiatrist who is the lead character, in KBS 2TV's weekend drama Recipe For Love, which began its first broadcast on Jan. 31.
