SBS 'Kkokkomu' revealed the serial killer Kim Yong-won case, known as the 'Cheongju version of the Yoo Young-chul case.'
The 214th episode of 'Tails of Tales' (directed by Ahn Yoon-tae, Lee Keun-byeol, Kim Byung-gil; hereinafter 'Kkokkomu'), which aired on the 5th, was the 'killer's first impression' episode, and featured broadcaster Kim Na-young, STAYC's Se-eun, and actor Choi Kwang-il as listeners, following the shocking link between three brutal murders and the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl.
The story began in 2005 in a rural village in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province. Thirteen-year-old Yoon-ji (a pseudonym) always stayed at the local children's center study room with her younger sibling after school. Her mother left home when she was young, and because her father lived away for work, Yoon-ji had to live with her grandfather; she was more responsible and spirited than her peers. Then one day Yoon-ji suddenly disappeared without a trace.
However, this disappearance was connected to a murder that occurred nearby. Two days before Yoon-ji went missing, the owner of a hof in Cheongju in her 40s was found brutally murdered in the kitchen. There were signs of multiple blows strong enough to shatter the skull, an 'overkill' accompanied by excessive violence. After tracing the hof's telephone call records, police identified Kim Yong-won as a suspect. He had a prior record including rape, special theft, and assault and had served 13 years in prison; he had gone missing immediately after the hof murder.
As police continued the investigation to arrest Kim Yong-won, another one of his crimes was revealed. A tip came in that Kim had killed his cohabiting partner and buried her in secret three months earlier. Specific circumstances were also reported that he had strangled her to death after an argument during drinking. The investigation that began with one murder quickly expanded to the possibility of serial killings.
Acquaintances of Kim Yong-won said he normally had a mild appearance, but when drunk he became a completely different person. Both crime scenes also had alcohol present, and this point strengthened investigators' suspicion that Kim Yong-won was the perpetrator of the serial killings.
And during the investigation a decisive link to Yoon-ji's disappearance was revealed. On the day of the hof owner's murder, Kim Yong-won was drinking with a hometown junior who turned out to be Yoon-ji's father. Everyone was shocked to learn that the person who came and went at Yoon-ji's home like family, whom Yoon-ji called 'uncle' and followed, was a suspect in the serial killings.
On the day Yoon-ji disappeared, Kim Yong-won visited Yoon-ji's home with the face of an 'uncle.' After he left, the child was gone. Police concluded that Kim Yong-won was involved in Yoon-ji's disappearance. Even more shocking was that Kim had pretended to help look for the child together with Yoon-ji's father. He even showed consoling gestures toward Yoon-ji's father, which added to the outrage.
Kim Yong-won was arrested a week after the hof incident. In police questioning, he admitted to killing the hof owner. Listener STAYC's Se-eun said, "If you are human, this is behavior beyond reason," expressing anger. He then said about the cohabiting partner he had killed that "because I loved her, I hugged the corpse and slept with it," shocking everyone. Kim Na-young said, "A person not in their right mind," unable to hide her astonishment.
But Kim Yong-won ultimately denied the charges in the Yoon-ji disappearance case. The police did not give up and continued to press him. Three days into the investigation, the truth of Yoon-ji's disappearance was revealed: Kim raped Yoon-ji, killed her, and buried her in secret. It turned out that the rape of Yoon-ji was not the first time it had happened. On the tenth day since her disappearance, Yoon-ji was found cold and dead. Listener Choi Kwang-il said, "People like this must not be forgiven," in anger. Ultimately, Kim Yong-won was indicted on three counts of murder, sentenced to death at the first trial, and the sentence was finalized after appeal and final appeal were dismissed. This case was called the 'Cheongju version of the Yoo Young-chul case' as a horrific serial killing.
The listeners could not hold back tears over Yoon-ji's tragic case. Kim Na-young sobbed, "I'm so upset. I couldn't protect the child." Se-eun said in anger, "I don't understand why so many people must be sacrificed because of one person's emotions," and Choi Kwang-il lamented, "Bad incidents involving children hit harder. How lonely and scared must they have been."
MCs Jang Hyun-sung, Jang Seongkyu, and Jang Do-youn urged, "We must prevent another tragedy," and emphasized, "Children need protection in our society. We must protect them so they can smile brightly."
After the broadcast ended, various SNS and online communities responded vigorously with comments such as, "How could someone do that to a 13-year-old child. Not a human but an animal," "The part about pretending to help look for the child is chilling. Truly like a devil," "I can't believe the person who acted like an uncle was the perpetrator," "I cry every time I see cases involving children," "Crimes against children should be punished more severely," and "I hope this kind of tragedy never happens again."
