SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Shin I-rang law office' announces another transformation as Kim Kyeong-nam takes on the role of Yang Do-gyeong, a man armed with desire and ambition.
The new SBS Friday-Saturday drama Shin I-rang law office, which premieres on Mar. 13 (Fri) (directed by Shin Jung-hoon, written by Kim Ga-young·Kang Cheol-gyu, produced by Studio S·Mongjagso), is a strange yet warm revenge adventure about "a haunted lawyer" Shin I-rang, who exhilaratingly resolves the grievances (han) of the dead, and Han Na-hyun, a cold-blooded elite lawyer who stakes everything on winning. Yang Do-gyeong, played by Kim Kyeong-nam, is the head of the law firm Taebaek. He is a person densely packed with desire and ambition, who has climbed toward the top with strong pride and a competitive spirit. He dislikes losing above all else and is a competitor who allows no margin of error.
This temperament of Yang Do-gyeong is also evident externally. Kim Kyeong-nam explained, "To fit the setting of a young representative, I based the look on a tailored three-piece suit but chose flashy colors to visually convey Do-gyeong's unpredictable temperament." He also dyed his hair brown to complete another representative image. With styling that combines solidity and eccentricity, the character's desire and anxiety are expressed simultaneously. But the Yang Do-gyeong Kim Kyeong-nam sought to portray does not remain a simple ambitious person. He explained, "He is packed with desire and ambition, but he is not a heavy, rigid person. I wanted to portray him as a character with gaps." He said he considered points where the weight could momentarily loosen and aimed to reveal those fissures.
And that fissure fully emerges with the unexpected appearance of a character. The unfamiliarly named lawyer Shin I-rang (Yoo Yeon-seok). His presence, which resolves cases in ways that cannot be explained by calculation, shakes the board Do-gyeong had set, and the hint of an uncomfortable defeat he experiences for the first time directly assaults his pride. In that way, the two naturally find themselves at opposing points.
What is interesting is that even such a Yang Do-gyeong has a person who uniquely weakens him. It is his partner Han Na-hyun (Esom). Kim Kyeong-nam hinted, "He becomes weak only toward Han Na-hyun, and he often wounds his pride." He added, "It's awkward to call it a love triangle, but there is clearly a rational feeling he feels for Han Na-hyun and jealousy he feels toward Shin I-rang." Between the highly empathetic Shin I-rang and the hyperrational Han Na-hyun, Do-gyeong stands somewhere in the middle. His complex position, moving between reason and emotion, desire and pride, is expected to create another layer of tension in the drama.
The reason Kim Kyeong-nam chose this work also touches on that point. He said, "The stories in each episode were interesting, and I felt it was a drama that people of all ages could enjoy." He explained that, along with the genre's freshness, the evolving relationships between characters episode by episode stimulated his desire as an actor to take on the challenge. Desire and ambition, and even fissures of jealousy and emotion. As curiosity grows about what face the Yang Do-gyeong Kim Kyeong-nam will complete to meet viewers, he lastly said, "I think it will be a fresh and new genre of drama that did not exist before. You will be able to enjoy various episodes and charming characters together," and asked, "Please give us a lot of interest and support."
