Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet is once again embroiled in controversy over remarks he made referring to ballet and opera.
In a recent interview released by U.S. outlets Variety and CNN, Chalamet mentioned the performing arts while talking with actor Matthew McConaughey about the future of the film industry.
Chalamet said, "I want to work in art fields that people care about," and "I don't want to work in places like ballet or opera where nobody cares anymore and have to say 'we have to keep this alive'." He added, "I send my respect to those involved in ballet and opera. (But) the ratings just dropped by 14 cents."
Although the remarks came up during a conversation about the survival of movie theaters and changes in the streaming era, criticism has spread that his comments seemed to belittle the performing arts.
This is not the first time Chalamet has been caught up in controversy over his remarks. Earlier, during promotion for the film Marty Supreme, he was at the center of controversy for describing his own acting as "top-level performance" and "the best acting of my career."
At the time, comedian Chelsea Handler publicly criticized him on her podcast, saying, "Chalamet is a great actor, but it's hard to listen to him talk about how good he is," and "I think I've never seen an actor praise himself like that."
Chalamet also drew attention by directly naming legendary actors such as Marlon Brando, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Viola Davis, saying, "I am pursuing greatness," in an awards acceptance speech.
Chalamet is currently considered one of the most influential young actors in Hollywood. He proved his star power as films such as Dune: Part One, Dune: Part Two, Wonka, and Little Women achieved successive box office successes, and he is being mentioned as a nominee for the Academy Award for best actor for Marty Supreme.
Meanwhile, Chalamet is publicly dating broadcaster and businesswoman Kylie Jenner. The two have appeared together at several awards shows and events and are continuing their relationship. In particular, Page Six reported that Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner are enjoying "married life." They have not filed a marriage registration, but according to the report, one source said the two have been cohabiting in Los Angeles for more than a year.
