Director Jang Hang-jun of the film The King's Warden shared his thoughts in advance on surpassing 10 million admissions.
Director Jang Hang-jun appeared on the live broadcast of Bae Seong-jae's Ten Wednesday Live, which was conducted live on the YouTube channel SBS Radio Erao on the afternoon of Feb. 4.
That day Bae Seong-jae said, "a broadcast to manage the rash 10 million pledge," and introduced Jang Hang-jun and production company CEO Jang Won-seok.
Director Jang Hang-jun commented on the popularity of The King's Warden, saying, "These days people recognize me even when I wear a mask. I ride the subway often, and they recognize me even when I wear a mask," and added, "(If I go to a theater) I could disturb the viewing environment, so I can't go. If people recognize me and I get worried about it," drawing attention.
Director Jang Hang-jun said, "A few days ago director Park Chan-wook sent me a text. He said, 'Congratulations. Thank you for accomplishing such a great feat, and you deserve applause,'" and noted the industry's reaction, saying, "Maybe he expected the message to be public to some extent. He said, 'I've lived long enough to have a day when a director praises me.'"
This broadcast was a pre-recorded segment that will air on Feb. 8. As The King's Warden has exceeded a cumulative audience of 9.4 million, it is expected to surpass 10 million on the 8th.
When asked in advance about his feelings on surpassing 10 million, Director Jang Hang-jun said, "I am very grateful. Honestly, I can't believe it. My family are all the same," expressing his feelings.
Director Jang Hang-jun added, "Actually, I was crushed because the first-day score was much lower than expected. The first day brought in about 110,000 admissions. I secretly thought 200,000 should have come out. When poor figures came out I thought, 'The film won't make it again, it won't pass the breakeven point, who should I blame?' If I blame the day, I'm the one who suffers too much. I've been going through days where I can't believe it," drawing attention.
