As the KOSPI index posted its steepest drop amid global economic jitters from the U.S.-Israel invasion of Iran, attention is focusing on stock trades by webtoon artist and YouTuber Chimchakman (Im Mal-nyon) in Samsung Electronics.
On Apr. 4, according to the Korea Exchange (KRX), Samsung Electronics shares closed the regular session at 172,200 won on the KOSPI market. The stock fell 9.88% (21,400 won) the previous day, breaking below the 200,000-won level, and dropped another 11.74% (22,900 won) in just one day.
As the stock market plunged, Chimchakman ran a live broadcast titled "I dream of a world without war," showing signs of despair.
On the 27th, through his YouTube channel, Chimchakman said, "I sold Samsung Electronics at 70,000 won and reentered at 210,000 won," and noted, "Either way, when the price goes down, doesn't everything fall together? If I don't buy, I'm lonely by myself, but if everything falls together, I'm not lonely."
Samsung Electronics shares had rallied on the wave of artificial intelligence (AI) enthusiasm. On the 27th, they closed at 216,500 won, and Chimchakman appears to have bought Samsung Electronics around that time. Based on Thursday's close, his unrealized loss is estimated to be around 20%.
Chimchakman sold Samsung Electronics, which he had held for about three years, in July last year. The sale price was reportedly in the 74,000-won range. On his broadcast at the time, he said, "At last, my (Samsung Electronics) return has turned positive," and added, "I had been waiting more desperately than anyone for a rescue team, but when it finally arrived, I didn't want to get in the vehicle. It made me wonder whether I bought this stock just to barely get rescued."
