Actor Myung Gye-nam (74) was appointed governor of Hwanghae Province of the Committee for the Five Provinces in North Korea, a political post at the vice minister level.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said on the 2nd that it had appointed Myung Gye-nam as the new governor of Hwanghae Province for the Five Provinces in North Korea.
The governors of the Five Provinces in North Korea are vice minister-level officials appointed by the president on the recommendation of the Minister of the Interior and Safety, and there are five provincial governors for Hwanghae Province · South Pyongan Province · North Pyongan Province · South Hamgyong Province · North Hamgyong Province. The annual salary is about 145 million won. Major duties are support for displaced persons and social harmony among provincial residents.
The new Governor Myung was born in 1952 in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, and his father is a displaced person from Kaesong. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) explained that it judged him suitable for performing the duties of governor of Hwanghae Province considering, among other things, that his father is a displaced person from Kaesong.
Myung Gye-nam, who began his career on the theater stage, expanded into film and moved between the screen and the stage. Leading the production company East Film, he also participated in producing works such as director Lee Chang-dong's Park's Brenda, Green Fish, and Oasis.
He also has a history of political activity. In 2002 he served as the founding president of the Association of People Who Love Roh Moo-hyun (Nosamo), and during the 2022 presidential election he publicly supported candidate Lee Jae-myung and delivered a supportive speech. At the time he also evaluated Lee as someone who would "stand up to forces trying to turn back history."
Myung Gye-nam, who continued acting until recently, has appeared in works under the stage name "Dongbang-woo." Attention is focused on the fact that an actor who has worked in the cultural and arts community for a long time has been selected for a vice minister-level public office.<
