Singer Son Seung-yeon became the inaugural match-up champion of "1st Place."
On the 1st episode broadcast, MBC entertainment show "1st Place" episode 3 depicted singers competing for the sole "match-up" first-place trophy and the right to advance to the "final showdown."
Kim Ki-tae, who ranked first in last week's "line-up" round, advanced automatically as a benefit and waited for his final opponent. Meanwhile, Huh Gak, Lee Ye-jun, Son Seung-yeon and Ulala Session, who ranked from second to fifth and entered the "match-up" battles, attracted attention by moving into 1:1 matchups as an in-house fight.
First, Huh Gak and Ulala Session, winners of "Superstar K" seasons 2 and 3, faced off. Huh Gak chose Yada's "Jinhon," and Ulala Session chose RA.D's "Mother." Ulala Session delivered an emotional performance, but as a result of the matchup, Huh Gak advanced to round 2.
Next, Son Seung-yeon and Lee Ye-jun, winners of "The Voice Korea" seasons 1 and 2, had a 1:1 battle. Son Seung-yeon said, "It became a very subtle tournament. Losing there would really hurt one's pride. I also selected my song with Lee Ye-jun in mind. Didn't it become more of a pride battle?" and chose An Ye-eun's "Lycoris" to sing passionately.
Meanwhile, Lee Ye-jun sang Naul's "Wind Memory" and perfectly executed the three-step high notes, surprising the panel including Rhee Minjung. In response, Baek Z Young said, "Wow, we really debuted early for the best," and Kim Yongjun also empathized, saying, "I don't think I could do it."
After a fierce contest, Son Seung-yeon advanced to round 2 and faced Huh Gak. Huh Gak relied on his main field of ballads and sang Kim Bum Soo's "One Day." Although Son Seung-yeon was expected to sing a ballad as well, she surprised everyone by performing Kiss of Life's "Bad News."
Son Seung-yeon, who perfectly sang a song originally performed by four people, even handled the rap and received a standing ovation. The audience even erupted in cheers of "That's cool."
Ultimately, Son Seung-yeon, who defeated Huh Gak and advanced to the final, faced Kim Ki-tae. Kim Ki-tae chose Big Mama's "Lotus" and captivated the stage with smooth yet solid high notes.
Soon the inaugural winner of the "match-up" was revealed. As a result of the showdown, Son Seung-yeon became the final first-place winner in the "match-up," and she said, "The moment the gold line appeared, it felt exactly like the feeling of winning an audition 13 years ago.
