Singer Son Seung-yeon once again proved she is "the number one of number ones."
On the 1st, the broadcast of MBC's 1deungdeul continued with the showdown among the five winners who finished last week's lineup competition. Son Seung-yeon, who advanced to the head-to-head battle in fourth place, faced off against close friend Lee Ye-jun, the winner of The Voice Korea 2 who is also active together as Son I Ji-yu.
The much-talked-about matchup between the inaugural winner of The Voice Korea and the season 2 winner drew attention, and before the head-to-head the two said in unison, "Since we know each other's singing ability well, we never thought we'd compete one-on-one like this," and Son Seung-yeon warned of a fierce contest with no yielding, saying, "I know many people compare The Voice Korea seasons 1 and 2, so if I lose my pride will be hurt."
Son Seung-yeon played her trump card with Ahn Ye-eun's "Sangsa-hwa." Having previously performed with lyrical sensitivity in songs like "Muldeureo" and "Hee-jae," Son Seung-yeon chose a song with a Korean-style sound to deliver a different vocal technique and emotion and explosive singing power, leading to a rediscovery of vocalist Son Seung-yeon.
Baek Z Young said, "If Lee Ye-jun's voice gently stimulates the sensibility, Son Seung-yeon gives catharsis with refreshing high notes, so it can be called a clash of spear and shield. The Voice Korea seems to have picked its winners very well," and the voting result gave Son Seung-yeon the victory, setting up a round-2 showdown with Heo Gak.
Son Seung-yeon's daring song choice continued into the second round. She rearranged KISS OF LIFE's "Bad News" into a rock version and perfectly handled all four parts from rap to vocals by herself, astonishing viewers.
After also winning the second round against Heo Gak, Son Seung-yeon defeated first-place Kim Ki-tae to become the first contestant to advance to the final showdown. Holding the trophy, Son Seung-yeon expressed her determination: Seeing the gold line symbolizing first place, I felt the same way I did 13 years ago when I won The Voice Korea. I will continue to do my best on future stages regardless of the trophy.
